Guest guest
Hello! One of our smart posters had sent out info. on the method used to check vanilla for sugar, using iodine. I have searched our site. And then my personal e-mail. I have no idea why I can't find this procedure. Could some one re post how to do this? Thanks a ton! I need to check a gift of Mexican vanilla. :)Aimee 2 yr son, healing leaky gut, SCD 6 months
Guest guest
I haven't seen this post, but I know that iodine is usually used to check for starch. A drop in a clear solution will turn blue (I think). Try it. Dissolve some cornstarch (if you still have any around :-) in a glass of water and add a drop or two of iodine. As a control, add the same amount of iodine to the same amount of plain water and compare the colours. You could also try it with sugar to see if the same thing happens. HTH. Guest guest
Iodine turns black when mixed with starch. I carry a bottle in my purse. It's been a great help in staying legal. tm_marion wrote: I haven't seen this post, but I know that iodine is usually used to check for starch. A drop in a clear solution will turn blue (I think). Guest guest
Sorry for taking so long, it's been a while since I've checked my email. All that you do is take a small sample of whatever you want to test, like say a quarter of a teaspoon, and drop a few drops of iodine in it. The iodine will turn dark brown or black if it has starch in it. If what you are testing is dark brown, it's best to test it on a white plate or cup, and let the iodine drip down the side of the plate into whatever you are testing. That way you can see clearly the change of color. Aimee wrote: Hello! One of our smart posters had sent out info. on the method used to check vanilla for sugar, using iodine.
