Guest guest
Hi I was wondering if anyone has had an issue with their child not wanting to drink when they start this diet. My son has been SCD for 2 1/2 weeks and is making miraculous progress, however he has stopped drinking & forcing him to drink isn't really working. Pre- scd he was drinking only water or goats milk, and was sometimes drinking up to 1.5 litres of water a day. Now we would be getting only a few mL's in per day! This has been the case pretty much from day one when we stopped giving him the milk he loved so much. I don't think it is a strike due to not getting what he wants, although maybe it was to start with. Now he just pushes any drink away and clamps his mouth shut & gets really distressed. We have tried diluted grape juice, but he has never liked juice, so we had no luck there either. He is still having wet nappies, due to the fruit purees and soup, but it smells rather concentrated & of course we are a bit worried. We are borrowing a juicer from my parents today & will try other juices - any recommendations of the best ones to try so early on in the diet? Any other tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again! Nonni (Mum to 3 and Finn 1 SCD 2 1/2 weeks)
Guest guest
Hi Nonni! Great that you are making such good progress on the diet! You ask about getting more liquids into your child. I make water popsicles. My kids love them. Some kids also like to suck and chew on ice cubes. You could of course make these things from 1/2 juice and 1/2 water if your child tolerates it. Jello is another way to increase liquid intake. Make it the same as with the popsicles: 1/2 juice and 1/2 water. Does your child like fizzy water? My kids love it! You could mix it with juice to make it sweet. Hope that this will help! I also have slight problems with getting my 6 yr old to drink enough water. He just prefers to eat but not drink... So I have to hand him glasses of water throughout the day and insist on him drinking them. Best of luck!
Guest guest
Hi , thanks so much for the tips! I have just made some pineapple juice/water jello tonight, so fingers crossed he likes it, he didn't take to it when I made it with grape juice . I'll also try the fizzy water and see how that goes. Unfortunately we've never been able to get him to have ice blocks etc - he is very sensitive to the cold and won't eat it. Pity, cos that was a top idea! I guess we can just keep trying these things in the hope one day he might take to it eh?! We've had a frantic day and I'm rather upset as we had to give him goats milk as that was our last resort and he was getting puffy and the doctor was worried about his kidneys & told us to give him whatever it takes. Unfortunately that meant that tonight we had a little boy crying for hours on end (so obviously he reacts to goats milk - couldn't get a clearer picture of that!). Let's hope the jello & fizzy water ideas work so we can get back on track. So we've kinda mucked up our SCD journey for now, but we have seen amazing results in this past 2.5 weeks, so I guess as disappointed as I am, this is just a set back and once we get on top of the drinking issue we can start over again. Unfortunately that meant that tonight we had a > little boy crying for hours on end (so obviously he reacts to goats > milk>> How about goat milk yogurt smoothie (goat yogurt, fruit and/or honey etc.)? Making the goat milk into SCD yogurt gets rid of the lactose and changes the shape of the casein from the harder to digest 3- dimensional milk protein to the easier to digest 2-dimensional milk protein. Another idea: homemade nut (almond, pecan etc..) milk. Sheila, SCD Feb. 2001, UC 23yrs, PCOD 22yrs mom of and
Guest guest
Hi Sheila, thank you for the ideas. We actually started almond milk on Wednesday & he loves it - yay!! What a relief! We are planning on trying the smoothies too, but we are just in the process of buying the dehydrator/yogurt maker at the moment & I am a little worried about the yogurt after the reaction he had to the milk last week. Might try it with the nut yogurt recipe from the pecanbread website first, until he's been scd for a bit longer. Or am I being paranoid? Do you know if the benefits from the goat yogurt are the same with nut yogurt, or is there something extra in the goats milk which makes it the one to aim for? We have been in the children's hospital this weekend and it seems that he has a urinary tract infection (just when things were going so well!) So at least we know why he hasn't been drinking and we know it has nothing to do with the scd! His drinking is improving and now we are investigating the cause of the infection. Hopefully after this hiccup & now that we can get him to drink, we may have smooth sailing for a while! ) Just as a btw...We saw our DAN doctor last week (before the reaction to the milk)- he was the one who put us on to scd in the first place & even he was amazed at our son's progress in such a short time (I'll never forget the look on his face when our little boy said " hello " to him!) I am just so grateful for this diet & to all you wonderful people who are willing to help with a bit of advice - thankyou so much! I am glad to hear he is already improving Sheila, SCD Feb. 2001, UC 23yrs, PCOD 22yrs mom of and
Guest guest
The best information I can give you is this: 2 1/2 weeks is a very short time. If he is eating soup, I wouldn't worry much. I'm sure he will go back to drinking water again, just keep offering it. Two things are in play here. One is that when we take out the milk we also take out the sense-dulling opiods caused by casein. All of a sudden, your son is not only tasting the food, but feeling it and smelling it too. For some kids, ones who already have sensory issues, this is a little confusing, even scary. It takes a few weeks for them to realize that these sensations will not hurt them. The other thing is more sad, but still true. Gut trouble hurts. Opiods are pain killers. So when we take them out of the diet, our true feelings of discomfort are felt. When I first went on SCD this was a real eye opener to me. After a few weeks I started feeling better than I had felt in year (unless I accidentally got some sugar or starch. Then, my goodness did it hurt!), but in the begining I felt crummy. I can imagine that your son may feel pain in his throat or belly when he drinks fluids. It won't last long and since he's getting soup, I wouldn't be alarmed. The only step I think I'd take is in giving him some diluted grape juice, frozen into a popcycle. The cold might feel nice. nonzbbf wrote: Hi I was wondering if anyone has had an issue with their child not wanting to drink when they start this diet.
