Guest guest
Is it SCD that is really so difficult, or all the intertwined issues? > No, It's AUTISM that is so difficult! To think otherwise comes from being naive or uninformed -- both of which you have 100% permission to do since you don't have to live it, but neither of which some of us have the luxury of. I am so thankful we finally did the real SCD -- but not because we have had glowing success. We first started SCD 3.5 years ago, but did not do the stages properly due to my son's food aversions. I now realize we still should have seen more GI gains than we did. The lack of GI improvement was a sign that my son's system was more messed up than I originally thought. I instead concluded it didn't help him enough and moved on to another diet and eventually found ourselves back here. This time around, we are realizing that when SCD cannot fix everything, it can be used to pinpoint an underlying problem. In our case, us bringing in the food journal of our SCD experience/lack of progress was what made my son's GI doctor run tests for malabsorption (including the pancreatic insufficiency tests that are not yet in). If we had not strictly adhered this time around, I would've concluded that this diet just wasn't working (or was too hard to make work). If the spirit of the conversation is aimed at helping people succeed on SCD, I hope the occassional tangents aren't taken as directing people away from SCD. The past thread was directed towards people who are finding SCD is not enough because of a co-morbid condition. So many of our kids have co-morbid conditions and I believe diet can address so many of them, but it can also be used to identify what will not respond to diet. -

Electro Magnetic Sensitivities as well as celiac disease. There is a connection through the immune system. I belong to a non SCD Canadaian list that deals with these other conditions and where a few people are also interested in SCD. The rules of those lists do not restrict wider discussion. So, I have tried not to muddy the waters by bringing my other illnesses to SCD lists often. I just left a list that officially includes SCD among its topics but also officially supports " modified SCD, " Rather than argue I left the list and comforted myself with words from one of Elaine's closest friends: " There will always be people who, after knowing about SCD for no more than about 10 minutes, suddenly think they know more than both Elaine and Dr Haas combined. Anybody spending time on a website focused on " Modified SCD " is getting just what they want, so don't worry about them. " But I do worry about them! What I have failed to realize over the years is that people on SCD support groups are the tip of the iceberg, just a microcosm of the thousands who have followed the diet over the years around the world and the over one million who have purchased BTVC. I have encountered difficulties on every list because I try to keep grounded in the " fanatical adherence " requirement that Elaine said the diet demands. It is so much easier to be selfish and just say, " Yippee, it works for me and I worked hard to understand it and learn to enjoy it. let others figure it out as best they can. " But this philosophy is not conducive to putting one's head on one's pillow at night :-) Carol F. SCD 7 years
Guest guest
Carol...that is exactly what I will do too....just pop in when a post is SCD and not the confusing BS around fixing autism with alternatives. Then I do not have to take a sabbatical at all...I just need to put blinders on...or else I get sucked into the talk. LOL Antoinette
Guest guest
I get what you are saying, but I don't recall anybody suggesting that SCD be modified here. - carolfrilegh wrote: > to make work). > > If the spirit of the conversation is aimed at helping people succeed > on SCD, I hope the occasional tangents aren't taken as directing > people away from SCD. > > - , I have Latex Allergy, Multiple Chemical Sensitivities. Guest guest
It isn't so much that it is being " modified " as things happening to these kids that SCD could fix with SCD alone. There are many on the list that depend on HBOT and chelation and DAN!. I am just saying that if they knew how SCD worked to help ASD conditions...they may not need to do these other therapies and treatments. Notice how I said " may not " ....some still might. WE all have a road to hoe....God knows I do. Antoinette
