Guest guest
Carol asked: -What is/was most important when you were or if you are new to SCD? The most important thing for me was to learn why the SCD yogurt was OK to eat when people with ASD/add/adhd are told not to eat diary. And then I learned that the casein was denatured, and how to introduce it...and have been thankful ever since. The list of things to eat was easy...just empty the pantry into the trash or give it away....and shop the periphery of the store. If it is a starch or a sugar...not allowed. If you think about it...it is actualy easier than other diets. LOL Any others have something to add? Antoinette and family of five.
Guest guest
My questions have been: When will I finally be able to leave stage 1? and How long does the healing process usually take for a clinically- defined healthy 20-something? (I say clinically defined because my annual check-ups always say I am in perfect health! haha!) - SCD since April
Guest guest
I am new. Last night and the night before I ate some of the Monster Cookies from the BTVC book. Both times, they gave me a stomach ache. What could that be from? Actually, we (my son and I) didn't have diarrhea so we ate the nut flour cookies. But moderation for us is probably the key. Maybe one cookie a day. Thanks for input!! I think the most important thing for me starting SCD (and still is) was to hear people's stories What seemed to be required for SCD was a major investment of effort over a long time to achieve remission and I wanted to know from people who had done it - why did they start SCD what problems did they have along the way how did they cope with any setbacks how long did it take what about the meds where have they got to now what have they achieved what more to do It does not have to take a book to cover this stuff but it does give some perspective eg when you learn that it took a year for Lucy R to feel the diet would help her or that someone else took a year to come off the meds. You get some idea how difficult or easy things cn be for different people and what it might be like for you. The practical details for me were less important since I felt I could read them up - the basics anyway that is I do still sometimes wish people could tell us once a year where they have got to over that year but that is just my personal take I guess. I hate to see people restricting themselves because they think The Stages is an official protocol of the SCD Diet. It is simply a guideline. albeit a helpful one, based on parents reports. Many parents have found it a Godsend but both Elaine and I had concerns that it didn't cover every food allowed within SCD and practically cannot. Example: A few years ago neither banana nor butter were listed and because of this one dieter never tried them. Again, The Stages are useful but not an official part of the original SCD. They were created for the ASD kids. Carol F.

We are advised to start with the Intro Diet, which is pretty limited but only required for a day or two. Baking with nut flour is an advanced procedure. Nut butter can be used sooner. You can bake with it too. After the intro diet, start introducing other foods. I am presuming you have the book " Breaking the Vicious Cycle " which advises peeling, seeding and cooking fruits and vegetables until diarrhea is cleared up if you are affected by it. Nut baked goods should be used in moderation. Example: Up to four muffins a day. Carol F.
Guest guest
Hi! Thanks for the message! I started on stage 5 in april... then went back to intro and stage 1 in the beginning of june... a couple of weeks later jumped up to stage 4-5 too soon. So, began intro and stage 1 again and ventured to stage 2 or 3 just a few times with ill effects. (I feel confident the bananas and/or spinach were causing the diarrhea, but not completely sure). So, about a week ago, I began slowly re-introducing things and its going well these. Have had success with very cooked carrots, cucumber, squash, sweet peas, and the goat yogurt. Will try to introduce some stage 2-3 slowly in a couple of days. Will stay away from fruit for the time-being. I have felt that i was lacking vital nutrition, but it seems if i increase the veggies very slowly, i might be able to tolerate it without all the diarrhea. Thanks! -
Guest guest
To all who are new here I would just like to say your initial reaction may be concern or upset about what you may NOT have. However in the grand scheme of things once you get over that paralyzing emotion, I think you will be thrilled to discover what you CAN have. Crackers, bread, pizza, cake, cookies, chips, pancakes and waffles, ice cream SCD style are all available to you depending on your tolerance of the various food groups. If you WERE GFCF before, don't freak at the fact that over here, " Dairy, " is not a four letter word here. ( in fact it is a five letter word everywhere). SCD dairy is in a class by itself and different from what you have been warned off of. I do know doing SCD if your child is ASD presents plenty of additional challenges but it also presents opportunities that may fulfill hopes you had abandoned. Guest guest
Carol, PB emails are overwhelming most of the time for me. But it's ones like yours that keep me focused forward instead of spinning around thinking " Oh my goodness maybe I should be doing this..doing that...trying this...trying that " !! Thank you for taking the time to write these! Since I first read PB in 3/07 your 'reminders' are the same but with a little twist each time to get my attention. Makes me think of mothering and how we will say the same things over and over in hopes that one day they'll stick. Guess I'm just an SCD kid.... Thanks for the consistent reminders of why I'm doing this and why it's really not that hard! Thatcher 3.5, autism, mild CP, SCD 3/07 Re:Are You New Here? But it's ones like yours that keep me focused forward instead of spinning around thinking " Oh my goodness maybe I should be doing this..doing that...trying this...trying that " !! Thanks , My " focus " came after a few pre-SCD experiences with a well meaning naturopath. I have since always admiited ignorance of the supplements on the legal list as I am allergic to most of those things but compensate by attesting that I am that rare old bird who has been on more diets than anyone here. Once I found SCD, I did it straight up without " a chaser.' Had I never become ill, I do believe SCD would be my diet of choice. After seven years, I still have not tired of it, had any regrets or wishes for an alternative and that is no hype, it is the truth. When I periodically feel burned out from being online so much, a message such as yours refuels me at once. As for trying other things, who among us hasn't spent the day rearranging the furniture-- trying other things.. and been so relieved to put things back where they belong.
