Guest guest
Hi everyone, I've been flirting with the idea of SCD for a while now, and I'm ready to dive in. I'm wondering about spices and especially salt. I haven't come across any recipes for chicken stock on the SCD sites, so I'm just going to make some as simply as possible. But I'm wondering if there is any restriction on salt. What about black pepper? Thanks in advance, Holly, mom of Quinn, age 4, recovering from autism
Guest guest
Salt is fine, and pepper can be used right away as long as your child seems to tolerate it. Herbs and spices that are dried are legal as long as they are in single form(i.e. parcley, basil, rosemary, cumin, nutmeg, ect.). Spice mixtures or herb mixtures are not legal as they often contain added ingredients that are not listed(i.e. poultry seasoning, pumpkin pie spice, lemon pepper, chile powder, ect.). Garlic salt, garlic powder, onion salt, and onion powder are the only single spices that are not legal to my knowledge. These contain anticaking agents that make them illegal. You would need to dry your own onion and garlic, and grind them into powder to make them legal. Dried herbs and spices can be tried after intro, but make sure to alwasy stretch out introduction of new foods, vitamins, ect. to see what is and isn't tolerated. There is a most delicious chicken broth recipe in Breaking the Vicious Cycle in the recipe section. This is a book that you really need to read to understand SCD thoroughly anyway. I believe the recipe is also somewhere on the Breaking the Vicious Cycle web page, too. Meleah New--what spices can we use? Guest guest
Hi Holly, Welcom to SCD. Elaine didn't worry about the salt. Even the iodized salt that has a bit of dextrose in it, I have been told is ok. I never use black pepper, but do know that it is not a sugar or starch. If tummy is hurting, might not want to use it right off. I found it helpful to copy the legal/illegal list to learn everything. It will take two piles and a two staples...but worth the ink. http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/legal/legal_illegal_a-c.htm this will get you started. Pluse www.pecanbread.com has alist of legal supplements...more out there than this. But to find them you will have to use your A - Z lists. This is helpful when shopping for them. A pain...becaseu hidden starches sneak in many of them....plus many things. Read labels on everything, even ground chicken and milk (creams). Illegals are everywhere. Caragenan can be in diary as well as poly sorbate 80....the chicken can have soy. Fun world we live in...you will learn to make most everything by scratch and shop mostly in the perifery of the store. I was told...when in doubt...go without. Fanatical SCD saved my family...I hope you have success too. Good luck...it does get easier...as you see the progress. Antoinette and family of five.
