Guest guest
Hi everyone, I just wanted to report that we started my 8 yr old autistic son on SCD on 5/3. He has made tremendous progress, particularly in the past month. This morning, he got up, took off his pajamas, dressed himself, got his hairbrush & brushed his hair, found his toothbrush & brushed his teeth--all by himself & without any asking on my part! I was so overwhelmed with joy and gratitude that I cried when he walked into the kitchen. He gave me a concerned look, grabbed a dishtowel and began wiping my eyes with it. Of course, that really made the tears flow! Three months ago, he couldn't even make eye contact. He is having real conversations (3 or 4 back and forth interactions). Before SCD, he could barely answer " yes or no " questions--and you couldn't be sure he wasn't just repeating the last word. He was EXTREMELY hyperactive and couldn't sit still for more than a few seconds. He is tracing very intricate drawings and sitting still for 10-15 minutes. So....in the past few weeks I have been backing off on his DAN supplements and prescriptions. I've been giving him the goat yogurt and steadily increasing the dosage. I've been feeling like I want to get him off of all that stuff (he often reacts to the supplements & vitamins) & don't feel that I've been given the answers or support that I need from his DAN dr. I was wondering what things folks have found helpful or beneficial. I thought I'd list what he's taking and see if anyone has any thoughts. Glutathione (via a nebulizer - the suppositories caused terrible reactions!) Spironolactone (prescription drug that is supposed to help with gut healing) Olive leaf extract (as an anti-fungal- he had been on a 21 day on & 21 day off cycle of diflucan, but I haven't given him this since starting the diet - I am worried about liver damage. I'd like to alternate with Oil of Oregano, but so far he has reacted to it) glucosamine chondroitin milk thistle dl phenalanine l-glutamine Minerall capsules SCD legal calcium SCD legal magnesium GI Pro Health Acidopholis Candex at bedtime B-12 injections every 3 days Folinic acid injections every 3 days Our biggest challenge now is that he's still having some issues with obessive compulsive behaviors. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. Keli mother of Ben, 8 yrs old, ASD SCD 3 1/2 months
Guest guest
That is amazing. What an incredible story. The B12 injection and folinic acid are common even for SCD kids because it is very difficult(if not impossible) for a damaged gut to absorb B vitamins. I wouldn't recommend stopping those. Olive leaf extract and oil of oregano are also commonly used on SCD when combatting heartier yeast along with the Candex. I'm not sure about other families' experiences with glutathion, but it is something his body should be making. If he is deficient, then it impairs his body's metholation pathway which is what he uses to detoxify his body. We use an IV for glutathion, and have seen tremendous differences. It's just something that you need to way the pros and cons for him with. You can always remove it to see what the rsult is. I am so happy for you with his progress.
