Guest guest
Hi - We have been GFCF for 7 years. Our son is 12 and we are now seeing more aggressive behavior and are trying to decide whether we should try the specific carb diet (he has always had GI issues, and the diet and prescription antacids and antihistamines have really helped) or an SSRI. Has anyone here transitioned from GFCF to SCD as a response to behavior problems? Did it help? I worry that trying the new diet will exacerbate our behavior problems, but am willing to do it if it will help him and we can somehow manage to keep the rest of the family on a more traditional regimen. Some doctors are recommending meds - can you take an SSRI and still do SCD? Any thoughts or experiences to share? Thanks Stcampbell
Guest guest
Hi, Yes! My son (8 years old) was on a strict GFCF diet for over 2 years before trying the SCD only 3 1/2 months ago. He was very hyperactive, had major impulse control problems & tantrumed frequently each day. He has improved greatly, is following directions and tantrums about once per week, rather than multiple times per day. I highly recommend trying it. I kept him casein free for the 1st month, then began giving him the SCD goat yogurt, starting with 1/8th of a teaspoon. He is on 3 teaspoons per day now, spaced throughout the day. I'm also giving him the SCD legal cheese. My son didn't even have noticeable GI issues (except challenging behaviors!) I'm not familiar with SSRI, so I can't speak to that, but I'm sure others have experience with that one. If you have any other questions, please feel free to e-mail me off-list. Some attained progress there but then reached a plateau. SCD has fewer followers than GFCF but a higher success rate. Since you are already Gluten Free, it should not be too difficult to follow the added restriction of starch and sugar and learn that SCD dairy is not mandatory but is an option with promising benefits. A one month trial is usually suggested. The digestive system is linked to brain function so it is reasonable to expect behavioral and digestive improvement. You will receive good guidance and support on Pecanbread. Carol F. SCD 7 years, Celiac
Guest guest
Hi there, With all means if he is having violent tantrums and not doing well with the GFCF diet; with all the success that some are having with SCD, I would say GO FOR IT, but for some the transition is not going to be easy. Well worth it...but not easy. There is definitely a bad gut bug connection to our aggressive behavior and " bad behavior " and " melt downs " in this house. Many that have gone SCD have had success with diminishing the out bursts and liability and mood swings with SCD. YOU best bet is to use the YOGURT though. It is suggested that some wait....but we went by the BTVC book. It is up to you. WE came to the SCD solution Casein free and starch free. I did not trust the yogurt as you may feel at this moment. Yet it is after we added the yogurt that we saw the best results in diminishing some of the ASD issues we suffered from, like tantrums and irrational aggression. I learned that casein in the 24 hour fermented goat or cow yogurt is ok. Go to www.pecanbread.com<http://www.pecanbread.com/> and read about how Elaine shared that the casein is denatured and that it looses the molecular shape and structure that causes reactions. Most start with the goat yogurt if they are ASD. Some even drip it to make it more tolerable to begin with. Because casein is denatured, it may no longer cause a exorphine or allergic reaction, but it can caused a " die off " reaction. This is the " transition " that you will need help with. It is also known as " herxheimer reaction " . It is the withdrawal, flu like symptoms that most go through when SCD starts to starve out the bad gut bugs that where fermenting from the gluten free diet. This yogurt fills the gut with good gut bugs that forces the bad ones out. This can make one feel rather sick, and should not be confused with intolerance with the yogurt. These toxins can temporarily make behavior worse. Soaks in Epsom Salts Baths and Activated Charcoal can help with this. Some build up slowly with the yogurt because of this. Some wait until the third month to even add it. IT is up to you. If you do not start with the yogurt you will need a SCD acidophilus, and a good probiotic. But always keep in mind...that the yogurt is the key to most having the success that they have had. It is more powerful than the best probiotic powders out there. God Bless your healing journey, Antoinette and family
