Guest guest
Hi, I'm wondering if any women out there has had Vaginal Yeast Infections that have triggered a possible IBD flare or visa versa. I've joined the list but never do have time to be a regular. I was diagnosed UC for the last 11 yrs. and been on SCD for 10yr. Not following the yogurt for the last 6 yrs because of all the trouble with makers, temperatures, and bad health results etc. I developed a Vaginal Yeast Infection about under 2 yrs ago. It has been " under control " but evidently once you get it...it doesn't ever go away 100% according to doctors and everyone else. Now almost 3 weeks ago started a bit of a bout. Excesive mucus in stool, or even only mucus. I went back to IntroDiet but on the 3rd day bleeding started. I was never leeky or going more than once a day. But enough to scare and started on 30mg of Prednizone. I hate to madicate myself (but no longer doctor care available to support my SCD where I am). By the forth day I was starting to feel discomfort.... was there a connection? I called up my ginecologist and was unable to do any tests due to the fact that I was on Cortizone and it would influence the results. The symptoms were not severe so was prescribed over the phone a cream. It helped and worked! 4 days after I finished using the cream...symptoms returned ( no surprise to me). Again as not severe, doctor recommended to repeat treatment - on my third day now. By reading up on Candidas there seem to be lots of regular basic food from the SCD that are recommended to be avoided. I way little and try very hard to ingest high calory food such as bananas. Evidently due to the sugars and candidas relation - it's not recommended, grapes also! AS I'm still with the Intro and now adding new foods it seems that the only allowable juice is precisely grapes. I make lots of jello with this. Ah ! what to do?! And lastly also it's recommended to avoid steroids. Yes, the Prednizone is not in high amounts. I was only on 30mg for a week and have done a weekly drop of 5mg. Down to 20mg now. Unfortunately it's rather hard not see as how I'm " dammed if I do and dammned if I don't " . Follow the diet as I have always done...or what??. I would have thought that reducing the Prednizone would help the Y. Infection. Sugars seem to be something to avoid. Without the baked apples & pears that I have I'd not have the fibers that help me avoid constipation ( major problem with my condition). Complicated indeed. Reduce quantity means going hungry and losing more weight that I really can't afford to do either. Now I'm not having the best week in recovery as the other days since I had started the Cortizone. Just slight imbalance, a bit of change to the soft in stools. A little change is enough for me to know that i'm unbalanced. This is combined with the return of the Vaginal Candidas. Soooo which is influencing which? is my question. Or not so at all....? Somehow I find it hard to believe! Last year I also had a very small UC flare and it seemed to coincide with that of a Y. Infection as well. At the time I asked my ginecologist if one had to do anything with the other...She said, NO. So I thought nothing of it. Time & meds took care of it all and indeed all was well. Then. Now.... a little voice inside my heads has doubts.... Any other women out there have their thoughts and experiences to share? You may need to use something different than just precription treatments. I have wrestled with vaginal yeast infections over the years ('knock on wood' none in the last year), but since I started taking S. boulardii I've been fine. <<Sugars seem to be something to avoid. Then. > > Now.... a little voice inside my heads has doubts....>> The yeast and bacteria live in the body together and will affect each other. If your bacteria go out of balance (eg. when you have a flare up) the yeast can take advantage of the situation and overgrow - causing a yeast infection. I have found the opposie is also true - when I have had a yeast infection it has affected my bowel movements. Years ago when the docs did not know what was causing my GI flare up I was hospitalized and they ran all sorts of tests including pap smears and vaginal swabs. I suppose they thought any number of things triggered my flare. Sheila, SCD Feb. 2001, UC 23yrs, PCOD 22yrs mom of and
Guest guest
Hi F , From: http://www.lifespan.org/adam/indepthreports/10/000069.html " Interstitial Cystitis. Interstitial cystitis (IC) is an inflammation of the bladder wall that occurs almost exclusively in women. Some evidence suggests that the risk for IBD in these patients is 100 times above that in the general population and that there may be some common factor to both conditions. The average age of patients with IC is 40, but 25% of cases occur in women under 30. Symptoms are very similar to urinary tract infections, but no bacteria are present. " From: http://www.ichelp.org/whatisic/AnIntroductionToIC.html " Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the bladder. Its cause is unknown. " Common " cystitis, also known as a urinary tract infection, is caused by bacteria and is usually successfully treated with antibiotics. Unlike common cystitis, IC is believed not to be caused by bacteria and does not respond to conventional antibiotic therapy. " From: http://www.ichelp.org/TreatmentAndSelfHelp/ICAndDiet.html " Although the existence of systemic yeast or " yeast syndrome " remains controversial in the medical community, a number of IC patients report success with a yeast-free diet which eliminates yeast, most carbohydrates, sugar, cheeses, molds, alcohol and fermented foods.
