Guest guest
<<I have a for the post-op group. I read we are supposed to watch things that are high in sugar, and real fatty foods etc. And we should not drink any soda, of course. My question is, has anyone experienced any dumping or symptoms from drinking things like lemonade or cranberry juice that has high fructose corn syrup in it? I used to be a heavy cola drinker and always gave it up when I dieted. I am current cola free now for 3 months in preparation to my future surgery. Its hard as heck to kick soda! Anyway I alot of water and drink lemonade, ice tea, apple juice, cranberry juice, etc. The label says they all have, well basically " sugar " added. Any thoughts from the experienced on this?>> Lee, For me, most juices need to be diluted somewhat...some just a bit and others need an almost 50/50 dilution for me to tolerate it. It's a taste issue...it's just too sweet if I don't dilute. As for lemonade...I've done that a couple of times at the movies and I was fine. But my fav thing to do at a restaurant now is to order a big glass of water with lemon....I squeeze the lemon into the water and add Sweet n Low (a BIG glass of water will get almost a whole packet of SnL). Yum! Just a hint of lemonade flavor that's not too sweet. I think you'll have to experiment for yourself to see what you like and can tolerate. Guest guest
Dear Lee, I found that watering-down juices, any kind, to about half juice and half water settled better with my new stomach. I have not had a single episode of dumping. I do find that skim or 1 percent milk settles real well. Congrats on tapering down on soda prior to your surgery. Not me. Up to the night before I was chain-drinking Pepsi. Best of luck on your journey, Tarri in Missouri MGB 09-29-00 329/275 Re:Another silly question > > > Hi Jean.. > > I'm sure a thousand people have answered this already but just incase > they haven't, here's the answer I got pre-op.. Guest guest
Hi Lee, I was a Cola Addict to say the least. That was pretty much all I ever drank pre-op. I haven't touched a soda in over two months now. It definitely was hard like you said. I had a " dumping " episode with Cranapple juice about 2 weeks post-op. I haven't tried it again since. I stayed nauseous for a while and I guess I am scared to do it again. I don't drink juice of any kind really ... mostly water and Gatorade-like drinks. I know other post-ops say they dilute their juices. I just assume stay away for now. LOL! I guess that means my surgery is doing what it is supposed to be doing. Good luck with everything! Guest guest
I can't drink regular lemonaide, but Chrystal Light isn't too bad. I normally drink water, it's much better for us anyway! Trudy Re:Another silly question Hi Jean.. I'm sure a thousand people have answered this already but just incase they haven't, here's the answer I got pre-op.. It's not the caffeine that we are advised not to have... The carbonation in soda can not only stretch the pouch but can also cause ulcers in our new tummies.. Also, we are advised not to have teas or coffee because of the acid it causes which can also cause ulcers.. I know I will probably get flamed for this but last time I checked the manual <unless it's been updated in the last 3 weeks> it stated that coffees tees and sodas were not good choices because of their low vitamin and potassium content but no where did i find that they were absolutely forbidden... Personally, I see it as a judgement call.. If you go out with friends and want something different once or twice a year, i honestly don't think a cup or glass of tea will truely hurt us.. But, I definately wouldn't do it soon after surgery.. I am 7 weeks post op and still don't touch the stuff... If you like to have a cup of tea once in a while like I do, I have found <after advice from other post ops> that hot chocolate is great and if you like the taste of cappuchino or mocha coffee, get some " postum " and put 1/2 teaspoon in with it.. it's great! I don't think anything one thing will hurt us as long as we take it in moderation.. meaning, one or two sips.. Guest guest
I personally stay away from things sweetened with corn syrup - terrified of dumping. I heard someone say they try and stay under 20 grams of sugar per serving of something - I do look at the sugar content and probably stay under that as well. There are fruit juices which are unsweetened - including cranberry juice (Northland I think). on MGB 10/04/00 Preop 275 -32.4 pounds in 10 weeks
