There shouldn't be a need to double-check, because as far as I know inconsistencies like the one regarding Sorbitol are relatively uncommon. But, in the event others do crop up, we need a place on the website(s) where we can list out all the discovered discrepancies. Regarding the book itself, my understanding is that the publishing is under the control of Elaine's daughter Judy. We, the moderators of PB, can investigate adding a " corrections " or " errata " page to the book, but the ultimate decision to include it in further printings is up to Judy. The website is more organic, so it should be, in theory, more up-to- date, but I'm hesitant to come up with a general rule that the website has precedence over the book. If there are other inconsistencies, we're going to have to evaluate them on a case-by- case basis. I tell you why I arrived at the conclusion that the website is correct in regards to Sorbitol. In the website, Elaine went into exactly " why " Sorbitol was illegal, whereas in the book, she said it's okay to use, but then she cautions against excessive use because it can cause diarrhea. The website has more information about the properties of Sorbitol. This tells me that Elaine must have come across additional information about Sorbitol feeding the gut bugs when the website content was published. One of the main principles behind the diet is to limit feeding the " bad " gut bugs, and because Sorbitol does exactly that, it goes into the illegal food bin! Although I've been on the SCD since March 2003, I became a member of the Long Island listserve back in 2001, back when Elaine was one of the contributors. I was around as the BTVC website was under construction. She had a general process in place: before any page was published to the web, she verified the content. My understanding regarding the publication of the 2007 BTVC, however, is that the changes mostly involved the addition of the chapter on autism, as well as a few cosmetic changes. If, indeed, that were the case, the website contains the latest information regarding illegals in comparison to the book. But just in case I'm missing something about the history, I'd prefer to have us check any other discrepancies on a case-by-case basis. I'm a bit astonished that the Sorbitol discrepancy exists, because discrepancies like that aren't that common! Thanks to the sharp- eyed " eacgetwell " for pointing it out. - Sally G.
