Guest guest
Hello, group I am a 36 year old mom of a 2 year old girl and I was diagnosed with Crohn's last month. I have been reading all I can and decided to try the SCD diet in the hopes that I can both find a way to live with this disease and possibly stall its progress. I just got the BTVC book yesterday (had begun the Intro Diet 2 days prior based on stuff I found online). So tomorrow or the next day I should go off the Intro Diet, from what I gather. But besides stating that the Intro Diet should be 2-5 days long, the book also says that new foods should be introduced ' once diarrhea and cramping have subsided ' or something like that. My issue is that I have a burning lower right quadrant pain that has been with me for about 2 weeks and may be with me for a while. I may in fact have to take Prednisone for this (10 days on Entocort so far has done nothing I can see). I wouldn't characterize the pain as " cramping " as it does not seem to correlate with my digestion. It is just kind of always there to some degree or another, burning and radiating to my right buttock, low back and right leg. It is nearly always worse at night than in the morning but I can't say any particular foods make it go away...not yet anyway. Right now it's pretty bad and if I had a Vicodin, I'd be taking it. My GI won't give me anything, though, and that's ok I guess but it's really getting old being in this much pain. I don't really have diarrhea. Loose but infrequent. SO...do I start introducing new foods in a few days or do keep guzzling chicken soup, eggs, diluted gelatin and juice until this pain goes away? Thank you so much for reading this long post and I really appreciate any replies. I am so grateful this group is here. -
Guest guest
You should begin adding new foods after a maximum of five days on the intro diet regardless. We don't use SCD for severe digestive issues. We use it primarily for autism, so I can't give much of any advice on what foods you might want to try first, how far to spread out the introduction, ect. There are several adults participating on this group who have been SCD for many years for their intestinal diseases, and have had incredible success. I'm sure they have great advice for you. Can I leave the Intro Diet when I'm having this pain? Hello, group I am a 36 year old mom of a 2 year old girl and I was diagnosed with Crohn's last month. Guest guest
Welcome to the group , <<..I was diagnosed with Crohn's last month...My issue is that I have a burning lower right quadrant pain that has > been with me for about 2 weeks and may be with me for a while My GI won't give me anything, though, and that's ok I guess but it's > really getting old being in this much pain.>> I found this on the net: " Pain usually results from intestinal cramping or inflammation causing reflex irritability of the nerves and muscles that control intestinal contractions. Pain may also indicate the presence of severe inflammation or the development of a complication such as an abscess or a perforation of the intestinal wall. Generally, new onset pain or a significant change in the character of pain should be brought to the attention of your physician. The pain of CD is often in the lower right area of the abdomen. This is where the terminal ileum is located and pain there usually indicates inflammation of the terminal ileum. " <<I don't really have diarrhea. You should add some new foods after 5 days. Good choices cooked buttercup or butternut squash, peeled deseeded cooked zucchini (small ones with immature seeds don't need to be deseeded), ripe banana, homemade (hm) applesauce, hm pearsauce. Just add 1 new food /per day (or 2-3 days) so you can guage how your body reacts to the new food. Are you using any probiotics or the hm SCD yogurt? Guest guest
Thank you for the input, Sheila. I will try adding overripe banana tomorrow as I have some nice ones around (tomorrow is day 5). I have not introduced a probiotic yet, and am struggling with trying to make the yogurt. I will post this in another message. Thanks again. > > Welcome to the group , > > <<..I was diagnosed with Crohn's last month...My issue is that I have a > burning lower right quadrant pain that has > > been with me for about 2 weeks and may be with me for a while > My GI won't give me anything, though, and that's ok I guess but it's > > really getting old being in this much pain.>> > > I found this on the net: " Pain usually results from intestinal cramping > or inflammation causing reflex irritability of the nerves and muscles > that control intestinal contractions. Guest guest
Sheila, you recommend cooked buttercup or butternut squash after 5 days following the intro. However, on the Pecanbread " Beyond the Intro Diet " chart of foods to recommend at each stage, the squash is listed in stage 2. So, in your opinion, it could be introduced in the beginning stage? How important is it then to follow the chart as a guideline (especially in regards to the nut flour in stage 3)? Guest guest
Hi Kay, <<Sheila, you recommend cooked buttercup or butternut squash after 5 days following the intro. So, in your opinion, it could be introduced in the beginning stage?>> The chart is a rough guide to follow. Since you are having constipation cooked vegetables would probably help you so adding the squash may be a good option for you. <<How important is it then to follow the chart as a guideline (especially in regards to the nut flour in stage 3)?>> Each section of the chart stands alone. So you each section is looked at separately. Nut butter (without tough skins) and diluted nut milk are easier to digest than nut flour for most people. Someone may be able to tolerate nut flours (Nuts stage 3) but unable to tolerate cooked berries (fruits stage 3). The chart is simply a guide - you have to listen to your body and how your symptoms react to tell what foods *you* are able to tolerate.
