Temporary initial symptoms... how long should I grit it out?

Hello all!

We've been SCD for 14 days now and have been taking it slow. We just

started probiotics two days ago with the low & slow method from the

site.

The list of temporary initial symptoms are hitting us hard with our

eldest (he's 6). Mostly he's just turned into a nasty, awful person

to live with... lots of anger, irritibility, headaches, constant

runny nose, etc. We're doing the epsom salt baths and gritting our

teeth a lot! The 3 year old, who was the target for trying SCD, is

still in his own world mostly, but nothing out of the ordinary (good

or bad).

We're also Feingold Stage 1 (for 3 years... we never could get any

Stage 2 fruits to work!) targetting our eldest who responded

wonderfully to the diet. With his behavior through the roof I

haven't dared to try any of the Stage 2 foods (such as apple juice,

even diluted) that are SCD approved since I wouldn't be able to tell

if he's reacting to the new food or not. We've been casein-free (5

years), gluten-free (2 years) and soy-free (6 months) so it feels

like we're going backward.

He *is* eating a ton more food... probably more in one meal right now

than he used to eat practically all day. Tons of eggs & meat

especially. He's even gobbling up avocados... something he wouldn't

have touched before if we offered him a trip to the circus! LOL

All this to say, we seem to be seeing *something* happening but how

long can we expect the temporary initial symptoms to last? I know it

varies from child to child but I'm trying to steel myself... are we

looking at weeks of this? or months?

Should we speed up the probiotics? The yogurt should be ready Monday

morning for trying.

Any other suggestions on how to help him through this? I hesitate to

add any other foods so we've been holding steady until he seems more

like his normal self.

cheers,

Bronwyn

Hi, Bronwyn,

Activated charcoal is something that may help. Give it away from foods

and supplements because it absorbs things.

Continue with the low and slow method for the probiotics. The yogurt

will help, but introduce it slowly as planned. Do not speed up because

it can cause die-off, too.

You're looking at weeks, not months of this. Just one example, my

son's behavior didn't change for the worse but he did have two weeks of

diarrhea at the beginning.

Hang in there.

Thanks !

I'll try the activated charcoal... one of our health food stores ought

to have it this morning. I'll look into it to see what it even IS as

I've never heard of it before. :P

We're mostly reeling that it's the " wrong " child who is reacting!

Thanks,

Bronwyn

Activated charcoal is found at any pharmacy/drug store. Ask at the pharmacy

counter for them to show you where it is. It comes in capsule or powder form.

I find the powdered form most useful as it can easily be mixed in to a drink,

homemade applesauce, ect. Just check the label to make sure nothing else has

been added.
