ATTENTION PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH IEPS AND 504'S...

HELP IS ON THE WAY!

On Wednesday, January 16th, the Learning Services Home And

School Association is sponsoring a discussion with Jane M. Healey, PhD, a

Ridgewood Pediatric Neuropsychologist. She is affiliated with the Mt. Sinai

School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and with Farleigh

Dickinson University (Teaneck Campus) as an Adjunct Professor in the Dept.

of Psychology Graduate programs. Dr. Healey trained at Columbia Presbyterian

Medical Center and Montefiore Hospital, along with postdoctoral training at

Boston VA Medical Center and BU School of Medicine. She has performed

neuropsychological and psychoeducational evaluations of children,

adolescents, and adults with neurodevelopmental, learning, attentional, and

executive functioning difficulties for the past 28 years. She also helps

families hone in on learning differences where there is spina bifida,

seizure disorders, extreme prematurity, cerebral palsy, Tourettes, and

autistic spectrum disorders.

Dr. Healey will discuss the benefits of neuropsychological testing

that help identify underlying reasons why children do not learn or perform

in certain areas of development at the expected rate. She will speak about

the structure of a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation and some of

the tests that are used to assess important learning functions such as

language processing, retrieval, sequencing, short-term memory,

organizational skills, attention, and motor coordination. Dr. Healey will

discuss how to apply this information to assist the teacher in improving the

child's functioning in the classroom and what parents can do to enhance

improvement as well. Modifications for improvement would normally be set

forth in a 504 or IEP to achieve best results in all arenas.

This meeting is open to the public.
