So I am curious from both this and watching previous bacon postings- is it

basically impossible to find BOTH nitrate free and sugar free bacon in one

product???

My son is a bacon lover- prior to SCD when we were just GFCF we ordered a

really good nitrate free bacon online from wellshire farms, but it is cured with

a small amount of sugar. When we try the sugar free, nitrate containing

bacons, he seems to react behaviorally, so I assumed it was the nitrates- I

have been allowing him to have the wellshire farms bacon with the small amount

of sugar once a week and he does not react to it?? I did not realize that

was a no-no for the ASD kids. But is there ANYWHERE??? you can get bacon without

nitrates and without sugar??? Does anyone know?

THanks,

Many people can find the Gwaltney brand of legal, sugar-free bacon.

It's found at Wal-Mart and other places. Unfortunately, it does have

nitrates (or is it nitrites? I never know which to say). You can find

uncured bacon at health food stores, but it has sugar or honey, so it's

not legal. If it has honey, you can't be sure the honey doesn't have

added sugar. :(

Sometimes people remember that Elaine said you can have bacon with

sugar once a week if it is fried crisp. This advice was for the non-

ASD SCDers so they could eat breakfast out once a week. It does not

apply to kids on the spectrum.

Some people buy side pork or legal prosciutto and fry these up crisp so

they have neither the sugar, nor the nitrates (nitrites?).

The brand at Trader Joe's is Citterio. People have also found legal

prosciutto at Whole Foods, Costco, and at Loblaws in Ontario. The

ingredients are pork and salt.

Sheri,

I haven't tried this bacon -- I get mine from a

local farmer, but you might check out

http://www.organicvalley.coop/products_recipes/product_detail.html?id=42&cat=9&s\

ub=35

I'm a bit iffy on the unidentified " organic

spices, " but it doesn't appear to have sugar or

nitrates. You might also check with a local farm

co-op and see if you can find a farmer who produces his own bacon.

None of that is available (prosciutto). I'm in North FL. I can't seem to find

a farm co-op or local farmers that sell their wares. This really is the back

side of the dessert. I do have one descent health food store (small but not

bad). Maybe they will have something. As far as meats go, they pretty much

sell Applegate. I'll keep looking. If I ever get to New Orleans again, I'll

have to import some from the sources Marilyn knows of. :-)

Pardon that Freudian slip there in " dessert " (desert). I think I must need some

dessert to overcome the desert.

Bonita,

Is there a Fresh Market anywhere near you?

http://www.freshmarket.com/stores/store_locations.aspx?Keywords=FL

I discovered them when I was evacuated for

Hurricane Katrina. They have excellent prosciutto

(in fact, I'll make a 100 mile round trip to

Covington, LA, which is where the nearest Fresh

Market is for me.) and will slice cheeses and so

forth, even wiping down the slicer before they cut the stuff.

They are also really, really nice about ordering

in a case of DCCC for me, which I buy all at once and take home and freeze.

Marilyn,

Thanks for the tip on Fresh Market. There is one in Destin (80 miles) and my

husband does go there from time to time for his work. The Destin Commons

shopping center is HUGE; I never would have even discovered it without help from

you. I give him orders of what stores to go to and what to pick up and he's

very good about that. Mobile is only an hour from me, but it is impossible for

me to squeeze a 3-4 hour shopping excursion into my schedule. But, I'm sure I

can get to one of them via my husband.

Thanks so much.

Totally off the subject, but do probiotics really speed the healing any or not?

I have never seen a legal bacon without sugar, without honey, and

without nitrates. Marilyn may have found one, but the " organic

spices " would need to be checked (hand-written letter from the company

listing all ingredients in detail, assuring that spices did not

include illegals).

Obviously I don't think you should give your son bacon with nitrates

just because it is legal. I have no idea how much better your son

would do without the sugar in the bacon. But this type of product is

the kind of thing we always point to for elimination when someone says

their child is not progressing on SCD.

I don't have special training or insight. I never met Elaine. This

stand on bacon with sugar is simply what I have gathered in 3 years of

reading the list, especially recent posts on bacon. Now that I am a

moderator I thought I'd better put the info in one post and take a

stand. Then if I'm wrong (ie., too strict) someone in the know (if

there *is* anyone in the know; SCD is pretty new for autistic kids)

can shoot me down. :-) We need this straightened out.

Bonita,

I like Fresh Market a lot -- they're sort of like

a smaller Whole Foods, and I can often find

things there which actually aren't available at

the much larger Whole Foods in Metairie (about 11 miles from me).

My sister took me to a Trader Joe's in Dayton,

Ohio, while I was visiting her, and one of the

clerks overheard my lament that TJ's didn't exist

in the southeast. He told me that TJ's is beuing

a major distribution warehouse in Atlanta, and

that there may soon be TJ's in some of our areas.

It is true that TJ is moving toward the SE. We are having one built in

Charlotte, NC as we speak, and everyone is soo excited.

Hi all,

To all you pecanbreaders in the UK - we found a brilliant source of

bacon, nitrate and nitrite free. It's just dry salt cured (you can

also buy bacon with just salt and coloured with beetroot but we've

not tried this)

The site is www.devonrose.com They also have a wide range of organic

meat. We really liked the streaky bacon, the fat on it went so crisp

and yellow, it reminded me of when I was a little girl. Yum, slurp,

I'm salivating.... think I might just go and fry some up!!

I've not found nitrite free and sugar free at a regular grocery

store... it seems to be one or the other. Our DS also reacts to the

nitrites in deli meats and bacons so we avoid them like you do for your

son.

However, we just found a " meat market " (like an old-fashinoed butcher)

in town who sells sliced side pork for $3.99 per pound. It was

basically bacon without any processing. They had it unsliced in large

chunks fresh or sliced in a frozen case.

It fried up just like store-bought bacon but wasn't nearly as brightly

colored. It wasn't salty but a bit of salt shaken on did the trick.

We found the butcher by asking the local Kroger butcher if they had any

bacon we could use and if not, did they know someone locally who did.

As it turned out, they did. :-)

Our DS loved it, btw!

cheers,

Bronwyn
