Symptoms of healing/die off/food sensitivity

Got our book from the library yesterday and have been reading. I

pretty much finished the " book " portion. Haven't really gone through

the recipes yet since most of them include foods that I'm not

supposed to be adding yet.

Didn't specifically see an answer to this question in the book. It

refers alot to changes in bowel movements, but I'm not sure if there

is more to it than that.

Can anyone tell me what the typical symptoms are that we should be

looking for to establish if a child is seeing healing and/or die off

or an allergic or food sensitivity reaction.

We've been on SCD for a week now. Pretty much stuck to the Intro

Diet for the first 5 days. Our plan is to add two new items every

three days to the diet. If no reaction, then we assume they are both

ok and move on. If there is a reaction, we'll remove both, wait a

day or so and try two different items. Since we had food allergy

testing done for our ASD son, we have an idea of what foods may cause

a reaction for him, so we're trying to steer clear of them for a bit

(although it's tough since just about everything under the son was on

the list).

My question is, how do we know if we're seeing an actual food

sensitivity or allergic reaction to a newly introduced food or just

effects of the healing/die off process? Change in BM? Runny nose?

Plugged sinuses? Headache? Stomachache? " Stuffy Ears " ? What

symptoms relate to what?

How long does it actually take to begin to actually KILL the bad

bacteria and what-not? How do you know it's actually occuring or has

completed?

Can you have too much honey? We use filtered raw honey. Heated only

to body temp and filtered.

I know I've really been asking alot of questions, but I did read the

book and just didn't feel there were any conclusive answers in the

book to these questions.

In fact, if I'm being honest, although I really do think that SCD is

going to work and feel it makes a great deal of sense, I found the

book to be quite contradictory in a number of places. Did anyone

else feel this way?

Not contradictory in terms of why the diet works or any of that, but

moreso in terms of actual implementation. In many cases, she makes

statements that seem to imply that raw fruits and veggies could be

added as soon as diarrhea is over, but then shortly after says to

cook everything first then introduce raw later.

With the book, I never felt like I could quite nail down just when

things should be introduced or what I should be looking for to know

that we could move on to the next " stage " of the diet. Maybe

the " stages " that I've been seeing have been put together by others

that have refined the SCD for autistic kids?

Anyway. Just trying to get a handle on all of this so I feel like

I'm not just floundering in the water. Thanks for any assistance and

for putting up with my ramblings.

As a follow-up:

Virtually the whole family (myself, my wife, my daughter and 2 of my

3 sons have stuffy/runny nose). I'm guessing it's not likely a food

sensitivity issue. Is this possibly a sign of our bodies cleaning

themselves out or is it more likely that we've just all come down

with something? No previous " hay fever " for any of us besides

possibly one of my sons, so I don't think it's that.

Hi Mike,

This webpage has many of the answers to your questions:

http://www.pecanbread.com/new/begindiet1.html

Die off symptoms usually last less than 10 days. But there are

exceptions. I heard of one child who had a reaction that lasted for

2 months but who later showed great results with SCD. I would

seek help if the reactions last for over a month.

Hi Mike,

The runny noses might be a sign of die off. Hang in there.

You will soon see great progress.
