Guest guest
My 6 yr old non-verbal son has been on SCD for about 3 months and we are on stage 2 of the diet. In the last few weeks he keeps having prolonged sobbing spells (of up to one hour once or twice a day normally) and he is inconsolable! It is very distressing. I cannot see any particular link to anything causing it, although I am thinking constipation? He has gone from being an every day BM to every other day and a lot firmer since being on this diet. He has the occasional bloating now and his stomach is a lot flatter generally and he does not do as much posturing as he used to. I am very strict with the diet and do not give him much honey (some days none) and he only tolerates cooked pear so far so I am wondering if he is feeling low energy and carb free type slumps. I am not giving him any anti-fungals (he had been on nystatin for over 9 months before I started the diet). He is having a very small dose of SCD sheep yoghurt (i/4 teaspoon a day) and 2 scd legal probiotics a day. Does anyone have any idea what his may be due too?? Many Thanks, Sophie

I was shocked at the reaction my son had to the probiotic. When we took him off of all of his supplements during the intro he was much more even emotionally and able to focus unlike before starting the diet. Then when I gave him a very small amount of the Kirkman's probiotic he was very emotional, agressive, hyper, and unable to focus. It was hard to believe the effect the probiotic had. Just my 2 cents.... Summer mom to Josh, Colitis 3 years, SCD July 07 (first attempt 3/07)
Guest guest
Sophie, I want to be sure I understand. Is it the case that the only carb your son is eating right now is cooked pear? He may be constipated because he is not getting enough carbs. How do you know he doesn't tolerate ripe banana, avocado, grape juice gelatin, diluted apple cider, well-cooked squash, carrots, green beans, zucchini, and other early carbs? When you introduced these things were they all peeled, seeded, and well cooked (except the banana, juice, and avocado)? Did you introduce them in small amounts? I think he needs more carbs. Please tell us what you have tried and what the bad reactions were. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/
Guest guest
Hi julie, My son is eating all meats, eggs, carrots, bell peppers, zucchini, butter nut squash, garlic, pear (juice and stewed) green beans, almond butter ( very small amounts occasionally) and 1/4 tson yoghurt a day. I do give him a little honey when he seems very needy (some times he just seems so upset) and it does seem to perk him up. When I make him a meal I use a good handful of beans and a couple of carrots and 1/2 large zucchini with the meat so I give him a lot of the veg he is allowed. He got bright red cheeks and super hyper and very stimmy on bananas which I am always re-trying every 4 weeks as he loves them so much. My son seems effected by all the food he eats and is rarely very calm. The crying has subsided a little in the last few days thankfully but he is more hyper again. Many Thanks, Sophie > > Sophie, > I want to be sure I understand. Is it the case that the only carb > your son is eating right now is cooked pear? Guest guest
Hi Summer, Actually I have fairly recently upped the pro-biotic so it could be this. I was worried that I wasnt doing any yeast protocols as I too removed all supplements at the beginning of the diet and now feel reluctant to put my son back on nystatin. I was seeing some laughing and stuff which I thought might be yeasty, and since the pro-bio I would say that this has stopped..perhaps it is a sort of die-off that the upped dose of pro-bio is causing? Thanks for your input - I think I will try lowering the dose for a bit and see what happens. Guest guest
Sophie, How are the sobbing fits? Are you giving your son a magnesium supplement and having him take Epsom salt baths? Those both have a calming effect and can help with constipation. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/
