SCD, meds and supplements

Hi-Sorry for the long email. This is my first time here.

I have a 4 year old verbal, but speech delayed autistic girl, who has

been diagnosed with gastritis, severe constipation and small bowel

disease. I have tried her on the SCD diet since the end of July.

Before, she was GF,CF, Soy free for 9 months and on the low oxalate

diet for about 3 months. She is currently eating only meat, chicken

soup, baked veggies including cauliflower which she freakishly craves

all the time (p.s. do I need to deseed zucchini when I cook it),

organic sugar free pear juice (only for supplements), avocado, water

and I just started her on raw lettuce.

I am scared to take away her meds, Pentasa, Zantac, Valtrex,

ketokonazole (anti-yeast RX), singulair and her supplements, some of

which I'm sure is not SCD (some have soybean oil in them and

xylitol/mannitol/stevia). Can I still get the benefit of the SCD if

I keep her on the meds and supplements, which may be helping her? I

plan on switching to an SCD legal probiotic and trying the goat

yogurt soon. I've noticed better pooping since being on the diet.

Before, she needed 2 capfuls of Miralax daily to poop every other

day. Now, with HBOT, her GI meds and the diet, she is pooping almost

daily without any laxatives. However, she is bloated and she seems

out of it, perseverative and sensory seeking sometimes (i.e. she like

to screech and run in circles). Is that a die off reaction or am I

doing the diet wrong by keeping her on the meds and supps? Do I have

to start the diet all over again if I have to take away her meds and

supps? Also, can I progress in the diet guidelines to a more advanced

level if she is pooping normally after eating a certain food? Is

normal poop generally the guideline? Any input is appreciated!

Thank you, Sally

Sally,

My son takes Pentasa and Zantac, too. I think the Pentasa is legal if

you open the capsule and sprinkle out the contents, but I'm not sure about the

Zantac. I'm also scared to take away these medicines. The SCD diet has helped

my son but he craves foods high in oxalates such as spinach. I'm not sure if

the oxalates negatively affect him. I do know spinach is an alkaline food

which I think is good.

I'm also concerned that Pentasa is a salicylate and those can be

problematic as well. Sorry I'm raising more questions than answering them.

Anyone

have any input on their experiences with Pentasa and Zantac? If they're not SCD

legal any other alternatives?

Thanks, Flo

Hi Flo,

Thanks so much for your response. It's comforting to

know that someone else has the same concerns. I think

I'm going to keep the Pentasa although who knows if it

is really doing anything. Chloe has quite a bit of

inflammation in the stomach and small bowels.

I discontinued the Zantac (the pink tablet) for now.

Chloe has reflux, which comes and goes. I haven't

heard any excessive swallowing from her and I was

afraid that the Zantac had an illegal binding

agent/starch in the tablet. Chloe is still on the low

oxalate diet-she was found to have extremely high

oxalate levels-although I don't give her the calcium

citrate tablets any longer since they were not SCD

legal.

In any event, I appreciate your feedback. Thanks so

much! Sally (mom to Chloe, 4 ASD, SCD since 7/07)

Hi, Sally,

I can't really say if your dd's behaviors and bloating are die-off or

something else.

Zucchini with small seeds do not need to be deseeded. But really

large zucchini (with large seeds do).

The organic pear juice you are using is illegal. If you need pear

juice you have to make your own. Legal store-bought juices are

listed here:

http://www.pecanbread.com/new/legalfoods1.html

Try to replace the supplements with legal alternatives. If possible

get the meds compounded to be SCD legal. If you can't get them

compounded and she really needs them, then keep on them. Some people

find that their acid reflux goes away with SCD. You might try

tapering off on the Zantac and see how she does. There are natural

anti-fungals for yeast as well as enzymes to deal with it: Candex,

Candizyme, Candidase, etc. Also the probiotic S. Boulardi combats

yeast.

If you eliminate/replace supplements and Rx then it would be a good

idea to do the intro again. It will get your dd off to a good start.

Moving on is based on poops and on behavior. If you can't tell by

behavior, then you have to go by the poops.
