Guest guest
Hi all My daughter has been on SCD very strictly for 6 months now and made some good gains at first. But her gains have stopped, and we have had never had any period of time without gut bugs. I thought her gut should be starting to settle after 6 months. I have had a stool test done, and she is carrying 2 types of strep bacteria. She takes herbal anti-bacterials and nystatin 3 times a day. I recently ran out of nystatin and now we have yeast back again aswell. She takes VSL#3 probiotic, 6 capsules a day. I don't know what else to do. Did anyone else take so long to lose gut bugs? TIA, Joy
Guest guest
Hi Joy, I have been wondering the same question. I've been on very strict SCD for 9 months and although I've seen significant improvement in my UC, I am not symptom-free. I would question the use of VSL #3. I had a terrible flare when I tried it - I believe it was from the pre-biotic component. I've been trying different forms of probiotics - none that I'm 100% happy with yet. Guest guest
Hi Joy, VSL#3 is not SCD legal because of some of the strains of probiotics it contains as well as the fillers and could be making your daughter worse. What are the ingredients in the herbal anti-bacterials she is taking? Have you tried the homemade yogurt? Some children do better with homemade goat yogurt than cow. I don't have children, but some of the mothers on the list should be able to answer any yogurt questions. --- joyous2go wrote: > Hi all > > My daughter has been on SCD very strictly for 6 > months now and made > some good gains at first. Guest guest
I saw on the Healing Crow website that VSL #3 is not recommended. I was taking it also and liked it. It seemed to help a lot at first. It says on the website that there is too much bifidus bacteria in it and it will proliferate to extremes when on the SCD. It says it will cause problems. I stopped taking it and I ordered the SCdophilus from the giprohealth web site. I will try this one and see if it helps. It is only lactobacillus and no bifidus. I know bifidus is suppose to be really good but maybe only for healthy people, not all of us. Doreen In a message dated 9/2/2007 9:57:24 A.M. Guest guest
Hi Joy, <<My daughter has been on SCD very strictly for 6 months now and made > some good gains at first. I have> had a stool test done, and she is carrying 2 types of strep bacteria. >>> Which strep did the test show? There are many different species. Were any recommendations made for the strep? <<She takes herbal anti-bacterials and nystatin 3 times a day. I recently > ran out of nystatin and now we have yeast back again aswell.>> Did you start with the intro diet? Gradually add foods after that? What foods is she eating now and how are they prepared? << She takes VSL#3 probiotic, 6 capsules a day. >> As others pointed out the VSL#3 is illegal. In the capsules the illegal strains are: Lactobacilli casei, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus delbrueckii subspecies bulgaricus); Bifidobacteria (B. longum, B. breve, and B. infantis); Streptococcus salivarius subspecies thermophilus. The only bacteria strain that is legal in a probiotic is Lactobacillus acidophilus. A good source of the other bacteria are from yogurt. You can get Lactobacilli casei, Lactobacillus delbrueckii subspecies bulgaricus) and Streptococcus salivarius subspecies thermophilus if you make yogurt with the SCDophilus starter. If you want to take L. acidophilus in a probiotic there are a number of legal versions available. I didn't tolerate probiotic supplements but am doing very well with the bacteria in the natural form - yogurt. To supplement I make yogurt using both the GI Prohealth's SCDophilus and Lyosan's yogurt starter. I get L. acidophilus along with L. bulgaricus and S. thermophilus. You can get Lactobacillus plantarum by making homemade sauerkraut. If unable to tolerate the fermented cabbage you can drink the tangy juice from the sauerkraut which is rich in L. plantarum. The characteristics of bifidum bacteria(Bifidobacteria etc..) change when people are doing the SCD. For others with a strong healthy microflora it may not be a problem, but once on the diet and limiting certain foods the natural competitors for bifidum are gone(or reduced) and SCDers have an overgrowth. Any overgrowth is not good, so we strongly recommend avoiding any species of Bifidum bacteria. many SCDers have had flares with them. Some have had quite serious flares.>> <<I don't know what else to do.>> Some don't find nystatin works for them and have to try other things to get yeast under control. Let me know what foods you are using now and we'll see where to go next. Sheila, SCD Feb. 2001, UC 23yrs, PCOD 22yrs mom of and
