yogurt making woes

hi everyone, before i throw my yogurt maker in the garbage, can

someone please advise: i've made 5 batches so far. i've been

carefully monitoring the temp - it is a yogourmet and i'm using

progurt starter. i follow the directions very carefully, yet every

time i get yellow liquid on top! the first time i didn't know this was

wrong so i dripped it and gave it to my daughter :( she did fine, but

obvioulsy i don't want her to have improperly made yogurt. i just

thought it was separated just like if you buy plain yog in the store

there is always liquid on top. grrr... if anyone has any ideas on how

i could fix this please share!!! right now i have the outer lid off

and it is on a rack on my counter, the temp stayed between 100-110 the

entire time yet still the yellow liquid...

thanks,

emma

I can't say for sure, but I always thought the yellow stuff at the top

was just cream/fat that had risen to the top. It is always there in

just about every batch I make (often it is like thick pale yellowish

creamy stuff but once or twice it was more liquid/oily and way more

yellow) and we eat it and tolerate it (dripped) just fine.

Started SCD June 2006, went slightly off for awhile in Nov 2006, back

on strict SCD starting May 2007. (Redid intro the last week of June

2007 and recently discovered that most carbs have to be thoroughly

pureed in order for my son to tolerate them). Sept 07 UPDATE: Seeing

MAJOR improvement in behavior and salicylate tolerance, son has

FINALLY potty-trained, and he is having frequent " trophies. "

Emma,

Is the milk you are using homogenized or unhomogenized?

I think the liquid on top is the whey. From my cook books and info I have

accumulated about cultured milk products they say you can stir it back in or

just drain it off. It isn't harmful, either way. It is perfectly normal. I

have made yogurt and kefir a lot and this seems to form a lot of the time. I

have eaten it and experienced no harm. The only thing I have heard as to how

to tell if your yogurt or kefir is bad is if it smells bad when it is done.

If it does then the wrong (bad) bacteria got into the mix and overgrew. If

this happens you will know for sure cause it will have an unpleasant odor,

not like yogurt at all.
