Guest guest
I am interested in introducing some dairy to my son's diet. He has been GF/CF/SF for several years, SCD since 4/14/06. I have recently purchased a yogurt-maker, but I was hoping for a shortcut. (Isn't everyone?) I recently found the following products at Whole Foods, and I was hoping for guidance. Are they legal? Would the yogurt have any of the benefits of the homemade? If they aren't legal, has anyone had success with them once starting to introduce off-diet foods? (1) Sheep's Milk Plain Yogurt from Old Chatham Sheepherding Company. The listed ingredients are pasteurized sheep's milk, L. bulgaricus, S. thermophilus, L. acidophilus, Bifidus. No gums, stabilizers, or thickeners are added. (I guess the Bifidus is prohibited?) (2) Yo-Goat/Cultured Goat's Milk. No preservatives, stabilizers, or additives, no salt or sugar. (3) 365 Organic Fresh Goat Cheese. Thank you for any help you're able to offer. --Jacquie
Guest guest
Jacquie, The reason no commercial yogurt is allowed is because commercial yogurt is only fermented 4-6 hours, and is thus still chock-full of lactose, which is a Bad Thing. Bifidus is not legal. In fact bifidus can get even veteran SCDers like me. It may be great for people without gut issues, but trust me, it is a Bad Thing for those of us with those issues. I've been making yogurt in both the Yogourmet and my Excalibur for six years. Only had one batch not turn out, and that was because the milk was too near its sell-by date. Short-cuts are what we all hope for... but it won't get you where you want to be! — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
