Guest guest
We have been doing strict, by the book SCD since the end of June when we redid the intro diet. I'd like to update everyone on our progress. My son's behavior has improved 110%. Instead of the glimmers of that sweet calm boy that used to come and go so fast, we now see that sweet and calm boy on a regular basis. He still has occasional bad days or moments, but nothing like before. I can't express the change that this has brought to our family life. It is like a miracle. He is more mature, more engaged with the world around him, and well, he just acts more grown up and smarter! We now have a bright inquisitive son that acts like a 5 year old instead of a really big wild two year old. He has had numerous normal stools now, most recently 3 in a row and still counting! :-) This is amazing to me for a kid that used to have such constantly runny stools that they would ruin his entire outfit, shirt, pants, socks and all. I shared a little while back that he had the first normal stool of his life one day before his 5th birthday. We continue to cherish that milestone. Oh yeah, and he just recently finally potty-trained! He still has accidents with stools, but pee goes in the potty all the time now!!!! Both of my children's salicylate tolerance is improving. We can have tomato soup now!!!!! Yummmy! Before even a drop of tomato product would make my daughter super emotional and irrational and would send my son flying off the walls. Now it has no effect except for happy full tummies! Soon we will get brave and try other previously forbidden salicylates. :-) The only issue we suddenly have is this weird thing that is happening to all of our teeth. Mine, my son's, and my daughter's. They almost look mottled with light brown stuff. Mine almost look transparent in places now. It is totally weird. Our under eye circles continue to look worse at times than they did before the intro diet, but that is getting better. I think maybe we are having yeast flare-ups. We recently took a week long vacation to Maine that involved 2 days of driving there, 2 days driving back, and lots of driving while there, and we managed to stay strict SCD. I did a lot of precooking and freezing before the trip, LOL! Oh yeah, for anyone interested, here is the list of what we are currently eating: broiled or baked meats and seafood, eggs, occasionally goat cheese, SCD yogurt made from cow's milk, cultured butter, olive oil, cod liver oil with butter oil, homemade mayo with sunflower oil, coconut oil, ripe banana, pureed cooked carrots, pureed cooked butternut squash, gelatin, pomegranate juice, and tomato juice (made into marinara sauce, tomato paste, or tomato soup). Well, I just wanted to update and hopefully share some glimmer of success with any newbies out there. I at one point thought that my son's intestinal problems just couldn't be solved by SCD, I am glad that I hung in there and kept trying. I hope that our progress continues and that we will be able to add some new foods soon. :-) K in Dayton, Ohio Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Fibro, CFS, yeast/candida, copper overload, adrenal fatigue (mostly healed!!!) Guest guest
Thanks soooo much for sharing, Chris! I'm really needing the encouragement these days. I still think I'm moving too fast with trying to introduce foods. We keep having to backtrack and regroup. I appreciate you taking the time to write that all out... it gives me hope that we may someday eat salicylates again. - Bronwyn SCD since late July 2007 DS 6, also Feingold Stage 1, casein-free, soy-free DS 3, our target, also casein-free, soy-free * also currently egg-free
Guest guest
I have a few more specific questions about your situation with the salicylates. I think we emailed each other off list a few months back but can't remember for sure. Could I email you off list or you email me? Oh, and thanks for the progress report. It is encouraging. Guest guest
I'm glad to hear your family is doing so well! My youngest has been on the diet since 01/05/07 and we are finding it harder and harder to only keep her on it. My husband and I eat healthy most of the time. But we do love our splurges. We also have a 5 year old who is healthy as can be and may still need to convert the whole family SCD, just so the 2 year old isn't left out. That won't be easy. I swear by this diet and think it's the best thing any parent can do for a child. On another note, your name seems familiar to me. Did you used to live in Cuyahoga Falls? Just wondering. Reports of discoloured teeth have been linked to low iron for some. See http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/pecanbread/message/54209 http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/pecanbread/message/68315 I had low iron last year and got the levels back up eating iron rich foods with a source of vitamin C. I started drinking orange juice and pineapple juice (in the mornings) when I had either liver or spinach. Guest guest
Hi Cheryl. I have found that it is easiest to have the entire family on the same diet, unfortunately my hubby and roommate are addicted to carbs and sugar, so I by easy processed side dishes, like rice etc, for them to get that fill. :-( No we have never lived in Cuyahoga Falls. But we've heard of Kuykendalls all over the country, Virginia, Texas, etc etc. No matter where we are (we were in the military for a while) we would run into someone who knew a Kuykendall. It is a rare name, but as my hubby says, " we bread like rabbits or something " LOL! Guest guest
> Congrats on the potty training and the fantastic improvements. It > has been a long road for you! Yes, it truly has been a long road for us. Thanks so much for the words of encouragement! > Kudos again > Does your daughter eat the same foods as listed below. Was pureeing > the foods that made the change for her? Yes, my daughter and I eat the exact same thing only because there is no way I could get the kids to eat different things. My son would probably find that very unfair. I'm not sure if pureeing helped her salicylate tolerance or whether it was just a matter of time on simple SCD foods and the addition of yogurt that eventually started to correct the chemistry. I know for my son that pureeing was critical to our success in firming up his stools, but whether or not it also helped the salicylate tolerance, I really don't know. My daughter's stools become normal once we started SCD. (before that she occasionally had long skinny soft stools or was constipated at times). , so pureeing didn't change her stools much. As for me, I can feel that my healing has been spurred on by our simple diet of pureed carbs. I have more energy, my stools smell more normal, are more regular, and well, just more normal overall. > Reports of discoloured teeth have been linked to low iron for some. > See http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/pecanbread/message/54209 > http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/pecanbread/message/68315 > > I had low iron last year and got the levels back up eating iron rich > foods with a source of vitamin C. We eat a lot of meat and so I thought we were getting enough iron, but our vitamin C intake is pretty low. Do you think it is possible that we aren't absorbing enough iron due to how low our vitamin C intake is? Perhaps I need to experiment with some legal juices that have vitamin C, or squeeze our own. Before we avoided orange juice like the plague because of salicylate issues, but now maybe it is time to try again. Thanks so much Sheila! Your advice is always appreciated! Guest guest
Whoops, forgot to answer this part. We started the yogurt right after the intro diet, back in early July. We are up to about 3-6 small teaspoons a day, but sometimes go a day or two or more without when I don't have the next batch ready yet.
