Guest guest
Hi everyone, I have perused your yahoo group several times wondering if I should do this diet. My son who is 3 1/2 years old was diagnosed with autism. He did very well on the GF/CF diet. We had him tested for other food intolerance and found many. Once we took away those foods...it opened a can of worms. I think we did too much rice. He started about 7 months ago with OCD behavior and it's at its worst. I'm wondering if I should do SCDiet. I posted a message once before and didn't receive a response. My question is ...Will it help with these behaviors.????? His poop is fine, just behaviors stink! He also still has no pretend play. Question # 2 ....is there ever a time on this type of diet that my son's gut will heal and he can eat more of a variety of foods??? I can't even potty train well, I have no treats/incentives for him. Please e-mail also on my other address: JimLynn24@... Thank you so much, Lynn
Guest guest
Hi Lynn, I'm new to SCD, but your experience sounds a lot like ours. My son is 4 and we have done IGG testing three times. He has many, many allergies, and they tend to change a little each time (essentially whatever he's been eating regularly ends up on the list, even when we did a 4 day rotation). So we're trying SCD and rotating as much as possible (very challenging in the beginning). After reading the book, I'm convinced that this is the best path for us. My guy has had pretty normal poops too, but now we're having constipation with the first few weeks of the diet. I see this as proof that he needs the diet. I'm not too worried. If you haven't read the book yet, run, don't walk. It's so easy to read and it helped me make the decision. Behaviors are probably linked to yeast and other intestinal problems. This is the only diet that has a chance of curing those problems. It won't happen overnight, and some behaviors may get more challenging before they get better, but in the long run, it seems worth it to me! We did ABA for potty training, but without treats as a reward--he just sat on the potty almost full time for a few days watching a dvd/reading books, etc. When he had success, he got a short break which was a huge reward. We did give him lots of snacks so that he would drink a lot (but those could be SCD). Someone was in the bathroom with him at all times (wake up till bedtime). Gradually the breaks got longer and we switched to a schedule (after break, he sat on the potty till he went again--at 2 and a half 90 minutes was apretty good schedule for taking him in). A few weeks of schedule (and many accidents along the way) turned gradually into him going on his own. He potty trained younger than his " typical " sister had! Good luck! Guest guest
Hi Lynn - We tried GFCF with our son before we did the IgG test when he was 2 1/2 and then decided that he had bigger issues with corn and rice and potatoes which we were using as gluten alternatives. We figured the diet wasn't going to work so we moved on to alternative treatments including supplements and chelation. In June '07 we tried GFCF again (he's now 4) and went corn free, rice free, and potato free as well. This did show some immediate improvement but then we hit a plateau. At the same time my daughter had started SCD and after some nasty die- off she started to do really well. We figured it was time to try it with him eventhough we expected him to have a fit giving up some of his favorite snacks. It really wasn't so bad. After just one week on strict SCD his OT had nothing but great things to say about him. He was focused, made good eye contact, tried to talk to her, sat at a given activity for 10 minutes, etc. She wanted to know what we had done. I told her we had changed his diet yet again, and although we had seen some improvements at home, hearing it from someone else made it more apparent that we're finally on the right track. You've got nothing to lose and everything to gain. Give him the chance to come out of his shell. The earlier you do it the better it will be for him, and there will be less " catch up " time with his peers. In theory, after a certain amount of time on the diet more and more foods can be introduced and some kids can even go off the diet. Keep in mind though that every kid is different and what works for one may not work for others. Feel free to e-mail me offline if you want to compare notes. We each have our own puzzle pieces to figure out and the more info we share the better our chances of finding them.
