Hi

I was recommended to use milk thistle to support the liver while on

medications like antifungals. Has anyone experienced with that? I would like to

know how to give it and how often. My daughter is 3y 8m old and weighs 36

pounds.

For your help thank you in advance.

Milk Thistle

Elaine writes

Is it legal or not?

I think the SCD™ will accomplish everything milk thistle does and will avoid the

side effects including diarrhea, etc. But I have no expertise in herbs and some

people swear that some herbs have accomplished amazing results. Considering that

the report found on Medline came from controlled research under the auspices of

NIH and STILL no conclusive answers, how can I give it my stamp of approval? I

realize that most people want " black and white " answers from me. In this case, I

cannot say it is illegal because it just

might hasten up the process of detoxification of the liver. If you have been

using it and there has been no diarrhea and you can see results, then use it.

Hi, our DAN advised us to give our 5 year old daughter, who weighs around 30

lbs, 5 drops of milk thistle twice a day.

Hope this helps.

Hi everyone! I'm new to being GF ... coping currently with getting

over shingles (I wonder if it had anything to do with the cleansing

effect of the SCDiet???) Now coping with yeast ... etc.

[sigh]

But I do know herbs (but not in conjunction with SCD). Regarding

milk thistle, many, many recovering alcoholics have used it to help

heal their livers and it has definitely produced good results for

them. One person I know (married to my ex-SIL) even has had Hep C

and it's kept him well thus far.

Regarding the D effect of it ... well, since I suffer from C most of

the time, that makes it sound even better to me!! ;-)

Are you on SCD? If yes, how long have you been on the diet? I don't

recall anyone reporting shingles when starting the diet. I had

shingles last year during a period when my immune system was taking a

beating. I have since added vit rich foods to help boost my immune

system along with regular exercise.

Generally when diarrhea is reprted as a side effect it can often mean

GI upset...so if you suffer from constipation that may be made worse.

Hi Sheila! I've been GF now for about 6 weeks -- started the intro

diet on SCD about three weeks in -- then last week got shingles.

I have Mixed Connective Tissue disease, take plaquenil - immune

suppressant, plus low doses of prednisone - so my immune systems

is ... well, basically, pretty screwy. This is the fifth time I've

had shingles (first time was in the 6th grade - I'm now 58).

I didn't follow the SCDiet religiously once I had shingles - but I

did avoid gluten ... I live alone and I was (and still am) just too

doggone wiped out to do a lot of cooking!!!

Don't know if I feel bad because of still recuperating from shingles

(I got on meds right away ... but the place of breakout was on my

tummy - next to my belly button ... how ironic is that?), or

yeast/yeast die off.

But I feel bad enough to go to the doctor and go through a test.

I've had so many of those lower and upper GI's -- the kind BEFORE

they knocked you out. Had a colonoscopy last year - looked OK ( " come

back in 5 years " ).

So ... if I'm talking about doctors and tests ... you KNOW I'm pretty

much worn down.

Thanks for answering!!

From what I understand about shingles a low immune system can allow

the virus to erupt. Since you are on an immunosuppressant you may be

more likely to have it. Consider talking with your doctor about ways

to prevent it happening repeatedly. I decided one round was enough

and after a really " stinky " year I weaned off all meds with doctor

knowledge (immunosuppresants that were making me ill), started

exercising daily, added in lots of vitamin rich foods, antioxidants

etc. and addressed another issue that is sometimes linked with

shingles - depression. Hopefully all of this will prevent a

relapse. I was very lucky to catch it early this time and got the

antivirals immediately. I'd rather not go through it again.

I don't remember eating much but DH helped through the worst and I

just dumped everything in the pressure cooker when I was up and about.

Hmmm... I can sympathize with that. :(
