Guest guest
Hi Toni, Welcome to the board. In short, yes alcohol can " trigger " an episode. Generally the advice is to avoid alcohol, any alcohol, at all times. Foods and other thngs can also cause a Panc. problem. Unfortunately the determination seems to be an individual basis and must be learned by " trial and error'. Usually those of us can agree that a low fat diet with several light meals rather than three meals does help. I personally ascribe to high fiber and extremely well hydration also. Pancreatic enzymes are a great help and determining ones best response to opiate analgesic type and doseage will be very useful. Although again working with your doctor and your own personal responces over time is likely to be the best course. Folks on this board mention everything from moraphine pumps to percosets. I'm sorry to hear of your seeming to have this disease, but I suggest staying tuned to this board as a constant place of ideas, suggestions, and encouragement in your progress. BTW, where are you from? The answer for that will help cultivate interaction and suggestions as to doctors, hospitals, and compatriots close to you. As you will see, I'm in Georgia and basically in Atlanta. Best wishes, Poncho - GA PS please feel free to ask any other questions or make comments about Panc. here. Guest guest
Hi, I am new to the group. I have a question regarding pancreatitis and medications. I had my first attack of pancreatitis in December 2004. It was mild albeit painful and I was managed at home on a clear liquid diet and percocet for pain. The cause of the attack is unknown, but possible due to the medication HCTZ. My doc referred me for ERCP and spincterotomy. The doc who performed my ERCP thought I was there for Jaundice and elevated liver enzymes, and when he looked at my labwork and saw I had pancreatitis he was very reluctant to do ERCP due to the risk of causing severe ERCP induced pancreatitis. He actually steered clear of my pancreas! He did write in his not that he performed spincterotomy and that my minor papilla seemed prominent. Since then I have had 3 attacks and it seems that ANYTHING that has the potential to cause acute pancreatitis will cause me pain. I had a flareup 3 days after taking a Lasix, and also pain 2-3 days after drinking two frozen margaritas. (I drink very very rarely) I am wondering if any one with chronic pancreatitis has these problems with medications and alcohol. I am an RN and I am still having a hard time finding answers to these questions. Thanks in advance! Toni
Guest guest
Hi Toni, welcome to the group. You have come to the right place there are some wonderful and supportive people on here. I dont know what I would have done without them. I am also a RN. Where do you work? What type of nursing do you do? Where did you have your ERC? I have never taken any diuretics so I cant speak on that. However, any alcohol at all can aggrivate your pancreas and it totally contraindicated. You cant drink alcohol any more and be cautious with OTC cough meds and the like as they often have alcohol in them as well. Have you had an MRCP? Its an excellent noninvasive look see at the pancreas. If you have any questions or wish to discuss anything, feel free; somebody is bound to have an answer. I hope you feel better soon. Warmly, (SC)
Guest guest
Hi and welcome!! I know that my GI doc at Mayo told me to most definately stay away from any and all alcohol including what might be in over the counter cough medicines, etc. He was very stern on this issue!!! Fortunately, I haven't been much of a drinker, even socially, so I don't have a problem staying away from it. I take Lasix for edema in the legs, ankles and feet. I swell from time to time (pitting edema) and I only take the Lasix for a couple of weeks until the swelling goes down. I have not noticed that Lasix makes my CP pain worse. However as someone mentioned before, what aggrevates the pancreas sometimes varies from person to person. Again, welcome to the board!
