Guest guest
FYI-- On Friday evening, Congress passed legislation that contains an important provision that will help end discrimination against people with diabetes who seek employment as commercial drivers. Beginning in the late 1990s, the Association fought to end a blanket ban that prevented anyone who uses insulin from driving a commercial vehicle in interstate commerce. Diabetes Advocates scored their first victory when the Federal Motor r Safety Administration adopted the Diabetes Exemption Program in 2003. The program provided for individual assessment of people with insulin-treated diabetes, but included a Catch-22 provision that made it almost impossible for anyone to even apply under the program. The bill passed Friday, known as the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: a Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU), eliminates this Catch-22 provision and replaces it with a reasonable system for looking at each person as an individual to see how diabetes affects him or her. As a result, qualified people with insulin-treated diabetes will be able to drive commercial motor vehicles. This is a huge victory in our efforts to end discrimination that will help comercial drivers as well as many other employees with diabetes!
