Guest guest
I dont think a person needs to stop taking a medication to prove to them selves they actually need it. Especially a cp patient. There were many times when I would take the pain meds prophylactically. I did not consider myself phychologially addicted just afraid of having that horrible pain come back. Besides most pain meds work better if you take them at the first sign of pain rather then wait until it is unbearable. My issue with the oxy's was that I did not like the way it made me feel when I took it. My mind was dopey, I couldn't even do the simplest math problems in my head. It made me nervous, jittery and very, well lets just say, cranky. I was only one them for 8 weeks and when I stopped monday a week ago I was literally sick for 3 days. I had headaches, backache (thought there was a problems with my kidneys) nausea, couldn't eat, cold sweats, and was very very aggitated and restless. It was the later 3 that indicated to me it was withdrawel as that was the feelings I had withdrawing from the demerol. Mild by comparison and I took that drug for 14 months if not a bit longer. I have never had withdrawels, insofar, from dilaudid and have been of and on it many times over the last few years. Oxy is an excellent pain reliever; however, as the resident reminded me of this yesterday it is one of the most psysiologically addictive pain meds out there. I will never take them again because how they made me feel. Any drug that a person takes will eventually become physiologically addictive. Our bodies become accustomed to taking them and will react when it is discontinue in some form or another. If you were to stop the oxy just to see how your body reacts, you will find that you will have some form of withdrawel. Every body is different and your reaction could very easily be completely different from mine. The same in how our bodies react to taking them. From reading your posts I would gather that the oxy does not affect your mentation in the least. However, it made me dumb as dirt and I had little or no short term memory. I have spoken to many docs about pain meds over the last few years and they have told me that a person does not build up a tolerance to these drugs, where as they need more to achieve the same degree of comfort. I am unsure of that as I had increased my dosages in the past and I am not sure if it were due to tolerance or an increase in pain. If you take only 3 tabs one day and get relief then on another day you need 6 to reach the same level then the next week only 3 again, I would say that tolerance is not an issue but recognition that your pain level changes from day to day and from activity to activity. I am not saying that people whould stop taking oxy' all I am saying is be aware that there will be withdrawel. For me that withdrawel was significant and I will never take that drug again, hopefully.
