Not to answer for Laurie, but for me it is important, periodically, to

reevaluate my pain. After a while, some people have verbalized that they are not

sure if they are treating pancreatic pain or withdrawal pain. This can be true,

since even in chronic pancreatitis, the pain can fluctuate, there can be

periods of exacerbation as well as 'remission,' per se. This isn't something I

advocate for anyone else. I do it to reevaluate my pain, as well as to

decrease my opiod tolerance. It allows me to resume at a lower dose. My

previous

pain management physician did not do a 'holiday' or 'detox,' what he practiced

was cross tolerance. Every two months he would switch me from one opiod to

another to keep my tolerance down. This worked great. Every two months I was

able to start on Oxycontin, say, at a lower starting dose, and gradually

increase it as needed, then I would switch to Morphine, say, at a lower

starting

dose, and gradually increase it. Therefore, I was able to avoid needing higher

and higher doses.
