Guest guest
My wife was told this week by her doctor that she is very anemic and scheduled an appointment for her with a gastroenterologist to see if she is leaking blood in her gut.. The doctor also recommended that my wife start taking iron pills. Last year my wife took some iron pills and had a terrible reaction. If anyone on this list has had any success using any particular supplement/food items, I would very much appreciate the information and/or suggestions. My wife has tried eating beef liver but could not tolerate the taste. Thanks for any help, Sam.
Guest guest
Hi Sam, I'm not sure if this will help your wife or not, but I was able to raise my serum ferritin level considerably just by consuming lots of red meat/animal proteins. (I was iron deficient; my B12 and hemoglobin levels were good.) I supplemented with 600-1200mg vitamin C a day - if your wife tolerates vitamin C, she might try taking some with her high iron meals. There are many reasons for anemia - not all are necessarily an iron deficiency. I think anemia generally refers to low hemoglobin - technically; but the term also gets thrown onto iron deficiency as well. It may be related to B12, so it may be useful to get her B12 tested. Also, if she's not noticing blood in her stools, and the doctors don't find any, she should evaluate her menstrual cycles (assuming she's still having periods/isn't into menopause already). If her cycles are heavy, that could be contributing to iron loss. I am sure someone more knowledgeable than I will have better advice! Guest guest
Another thing that might make someone seem anemic is thyroid problems. Of course, I have no idea if this would apply to your wife. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/
Guest guest
From my own experience, there are two types of anemia that go hand in hand with intestinal disease. B12 defeciency and iron. The iron can be taken care of by eating the liver pate that Elaine suggests in her book. The B12 issues can be taken care of by taking a good methyl B12 nasal spray or gettting methyl B12 shorts from a doctor. New Beginnings has a methyl B12 nasal spray. B12 taken oraly is useless. Also google foods that are naturaly high in iron and B12 and eat plenty of them. Iron supplements are not recommended on the SCDiet. They make a vicious cycle worse. I didn't like regular store liver but found a source from grass fed beef. Much different. You can try making pate with it. I simmer the liver in legal bourbon or legal whiskey (legal rye), cool and then blend with homemade mayo. You can also cook it up with some legal bacon etc.. I also eat greens like spinach, romaine, beet greens etc. When I eat a iron rich food I always make sure that I have some source of vitaimn C as this promotes absorption of the iron. I was eating lots of iron rich foods but was low in iron. Only when I added the Vit C did my levels slowly and steadily rise. Guest guest
Our 9 yo son who was severely anemic has been taking Hemagenics from the company Metagenics, recommended by our acupuncturist. Guest guest
Hi, For low iron you can do B12 shots. You can have a natural Dr. order you these shots. They are dosed by your weight. That will bring up your iron counts. Otherwise you can do a supplement by Enzymatic Therapy called " liquid Liver " It is a softgel that doesn't taste. So that might be a good way. Guest guest
Welcome to the group Beth, Iron supplements are not recommended with SCD - they are hard on the gut. Some find iron shots good. Also iron rich foods paired with source of vitamin C helpful. Mostly though you first need to find out what is causing the low iron - otherwise you are pouring " water " in a " barrel with holes " . Guest guest
Hi, Thanks for the welcome to the group! I do know that iron supplements are not recommended on the SCD but this supplement is from liver extract NOT iron. It is just like eating liver, that is of course if you like liver! When I responded back I did fail to check the other ingredients on the bottle to see if they are SCD compliant! But for the iron source it is from liver. Hope this isn't too confusing! I am so so so new at this diet only 1 month so am learning how to really do it yet! But I have alot of knowlege in other diet programs and health issues as I have worked in the natural health field business for 25 years. So I may be able to answer some of the questions and problems you are all having. And I promise I will look at the bottle before recommending something! Thanks!
