Guest guest
Hi , I had a Beger procedure which is the organ sparing whipple. I had problems with all the anastomosis involved in the standard whipple. I had a transduodenal sphincteroplasty in Oct 03. I was out of work until Jan 2, then went back full time. By the end of themonth I had gotten an acute attack and was admitted; in the same hospital I worked at. It was found that in the 5 months since my previous ERCP my pancreas had deteriorated very rapidly with dilation and stenosis of the main pancreatic duct and the beginning of clubbing in the side branches, the accessory ducts. They put in a g-j tube did a bunch of tests and told me I need to have a total pancreatectomy with the autologous islet cell transplant. They referred me to Cincinatti OH. The docotor there said I was not sick enough. My surgeon here talked me into the Beger saying it would buy me some time. I had that in March of 04. At first I felt better but it didn't last very long. I went back to work in June part time and lasted only a few weeks before I had to resign as there was no way I could provide the quality of care I would want for myself or a loved one. I went back and forth to Cincy and finally had the total with auto islets Nov of 04. I wish I had never had the Beger, it seems in retrospect to have been an act of futility. there are quite a few people on here, Cecelia being one, that have had a lot of releif from the whipple. It may last decades and may not but she was very happy with the results as least according to her last post. What is the current condition of your pancreas? What is the causitive factor, if you know. Have you had any other surgeries? What is the rationale behind those docs saying the whipple is your answer? I had all of my surgeries at MUSC except for the total. I know I did not answer your question but I do hope this helps some. If you want more details please just ask. Warmly, christine (SC)
