Guest guest
Hi, We're starting week 4 of SCD and after a few rough weeks, the kids are doing fine (4yo with autism, 6yo sister, me and husband all on diet). My son is insatiably hungry, though. Is this normal? Here's what he eats at a typical meal/snack and still ends up hungry: 1/2 to 3/4 pound of meat (I'm rotating organic beef, chicken, buffalo, pork, lamb, turkey and salmon--all roasted in the crock pot or ground meat patties in my iron skillet) and 3-4 servings of cooked green beans or spinach and for dessert he gets a diluted legal fruit juice popsicle or cooked fruit (1/2 cup serving). After all that, fifteen minutes later he says he's hungry. I'm trying to limit eating to meals and two snacks/day, but he's CONSTANTLY HUNGRY. Should I limit him this way? He's not overweight, but not skinny--recent stool test reveals bacterial infection (treated with Gentamiacin /3days and following up with biocidin) and yeast but no parasites. It could be a growth spurt? (he's tall and getting taller-- sometimes I think I can see him growing if he holds really still!). He'll start goat yogurt for the first time tomorrow (after 2 years 4 months casein free). He also takes enzymes (Kirkman fruit free Enzyme Complete and Lipo Core for fats), Valtrex and Sporonox. Other supplements (all SCD legal) and probiotics (which contain Bifidus, but recent lab work showed he has NO growth of any friendly bacteria-- so I'm finishing this bottle then will switch to acidophillus only). Cholesterol test was normal except high triglycerides (low carb diet is supposed to help that, from what I've read), but I'm concerned about him eating so much protein and the fats that he has a hard time metabolizing (per lab work). Any adivice? Thanks in advance! Holly Mom of Quinn, 4, austism, and Fiona, 6, food allergies/sensory issues, starting week 4 SCD.
Guest guest
I would not limit him. I don't see banana and avocado listed. They have lots of calories and are easy snacks. The enzymes he takes should be helping with the digestion of the fats and protein. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/
Guest guest
When we first identified that my dd was reacting to gluten, she took a little to get used to not having it in her body but then she also got incredibly hungry. She was eating healthy foods so we went ahead and let her eat. I chalked it up to her body finally getting nutrients that it needed. We happened to have a ped appointment (well child, dh insists on them) a month after starting where they measured her height. I know she'd already outgrown a number of pants at that point. Pants that she'd been fitting into for about 2 years (she'd just turned 4 so these were size 2T's that she was finally outgrowing). I found the measurements a month after that - so two months after changing her diet - and measured her height again and found that between the appointment and my measuring she'd grown another inch. I don't know what her height was when she started out the diet but I figure she grew 2-3 inches those first couple of months. I'd give it a week and see if it tapers down. Then see if there is something he's reacting to and craving. It could simply be a growth spurt now that his body is getting foods that it can handle. HUNGRY all the time!
