Guest guest
HI, I had a ERCP with stent placed yesterday. I talked to the Dr who did the placement and he said that I need to have an xray in a week and if the stent has not migrated out I need to have it removed. Anyone ever heard of this?? Guest guest
Toni, Firstly, when they place a stent it is just temporary and they expect them to travel through the body within a week of it being placed. There is a chance (a very low chance mind you) that this might not happen...I am one of the very low minority that this didn't happen to. I had a KUB taken a week after the stent placement and it showed no stent, so we thought it had gone through and out, and just not helped my ducts as I began having bad attacks just before I went and had the KUB taken. After that time, I had 17 ERCP's in the space of 8 months. Placing and removing stents, sphincterotomies, and each stent was accounted for. When I was down at MD for another problem, I had a major attack again, and the GI team admitted me and did an ERCP to fix this problem once and for all if they could. Whilst they were in there, they found a stent which had been drawn deep into my pancreas. It had never shown up before, therefore they said it must have dislodged and luckily for me, gone the other way, and was thus able to be pulled out. I have 2 theories about this stent. It was either the first one that didn't go it's natural course, or as a nurse told me after getting details from one of the partners of Dr Lehman, 2 stents were actually placed the very first time and one got sucked in whilst the other other one did go where it was meant to go... I queried the 2 stents when Dr Shermann told me only one was placed, as did Dr Lehman, although the nurse said another partner told her 2 were actually placed. I also had at one time a stent placed around the wrong way so it wouldn't fall out, as my ducts kept closing shut each time one was removed. This worked for 3 months, but then began to block. Permanent stents are usually only used for terminal people because of 2 reasons. They can cause scar tissue (any stent can, but the longer it is in the more chance of that happening), and secondly, permanent ones are made out of some type of metal, and noone knows what the body will do with this foreign object in it for many years, whether the body's enzymes will attack it, trying to break it down, causing disasters to the patients etc...I for one don't want to find out firsthand. They used a temporary stent in me, but putting it in back to front allowed the little prongs to dig into the duct wall which stopped it from falling out. Guest guest
Hi Toni, Glad your ERCP is over and you are feeling so much better, that is great. The stents always help me alot too. Yes, the stents are designed to pass thru by themselves, but sometimes they do not. I think it may be due to how small our ducts are. My ducts are very small and the stents have always been there when I had my x-ray. Yes, they had to go back in and pull it out but I NEVER had a flair with a stent pull. I hope yours passes on it's own and you continue to feel better and better. Talk to you soon. Love, w
Guest guest
My experience with stenting....I always have to go back to have the stents removed 2 weeks later. I don't get to have the ones that pass themselves. Lucky the person that gets those. Sandy in Ca -------------- Original message -------------- ..
