Guest guest
I am having a hard time finding a good source of honey. I live in TN and was able to find a local beekeeper. I spoke with them about their honey. They told me that their honey is unfiltered bause most bee keepers cannot afford the expensive machinery involved in filtering it. They do put their honey thru a screen of what looks like a sock that takes out the bee parts, but the pollen is still in it they said. The honey appears dark in the jar and is not clear when held up to the light. The bee keeper told me to be VERY careful when buying storebought honey as some of it is imported and contains heavy pesticides. She also said that some bee keepers feed their bees sugar water and the quality is bad and more like Karo syrup as it changes the taste. I went out shopping for honey tonight but found nothing at the store that seemed pure. Can anyone tell me what brands they buy and what store they but it from? Also, is clover honey the kind to buy or stay away from? What types are recommended? I found a honey on Digestive Wellness but I cant see the label. Does anyone know what it is and if it is good honey? I would love to know the name so that I can research it. Thanks, Beth mom to 2 yrs. old and have beed SCD for about 3 weeks
Guest guest
I hope that someone has a more satisfying answer for you, but here is mine. In my state (Indiana) the law says that if the label says " pure honey " then nothing can be added to it, so I always look for that label and also for clear honey. Clover honey is a good mild-tasting honey. I occasionally buy supermarket honey--Sue Bee or Dutch something, but I usually buy honey from the health food store that comes in 5-pound jars. I have never searched out a beekeeper, but there is one in my local organic farmer's market (who was selling clear honey BTW so I'm not so sure they can't afford it). This local fellow was also trying to tell me scary stories about other folks' honey. It makes me wonder if it's true or if it's scare tactics to increase his sales. Maybe I should be searching for more hard facts on honey, but continues to make slow, steady progress, so I've put this on the back burner. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/04 > > I am having a hard time finding a good source of honey. Guest guest
We use the honey from Digestive wellness and love it - I've let friends and family taste it and they loved the flavor too. This is a great price for honey - In my opinion anyway, compared to what it costs around here in the stores. The brand it is has a web site - we also bought Orange Blossom honey first from our grocery store but they quit carrying it so we purchased it directly from the Company - on line. We love that flavor too - we use it on top of things like pancakes - do to cost we do not cook with it. It is much more expensive to order directly from the company than purchase from Digestive Wellness. But Digestive Wellness only has the plain honey. Dutch Gold is the Brand of the honey. I did communicate with the company last February to make sure it was SCD compliant. I'll see if I kept the email. Guest guest
DH and I have been beekeepers for 15 years and have been reading the beekeeping magazines for almost as long. There are always discussions about imported honey being tainted with corn syrup and/or pesticides. The best advice that we can give is to find a local beekeeper and ask questions about her/his operation (beekeepers LOVE when folks are interested in their craft). Surprisingly, many counties in the USA have active beekeeping associations. If honey crystallizes, then it does not contain corn syrup. Honey that is heated above 140F doesn't crystallize either and is no longer considered raw honey. Bees make clover honey predominately from clover nectar. As for clarity, it could be the beginning of crystallization. Beth F preparing to begin SCD for myself and our DS
Guest guest
Welcome to the group, Beth. Thanks for the info from one in-the-know. Though the beginning of crystallization could cloud the honey we still need to be extremely careful not to use unfiltered honey, so if we are not sure, we should not eat honey that is not clear. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/
