Guest guest
Eileen this is the complete surgical removal the the pancreas. Then they isolate and harvast the islet cells; the insulin producing cells found mainly in the tail of the pancreas. These cells are then implanted into the portal vein of the liver. I had this surgery last November. I take very little insulin, and was taking no insulin at all until I had to have 2 more surgeries last May. Just my dumb luck. Now I take enough insulin to cover a meal that is very high in carbs or a big desert, like cake and ice cream or something. My islets are now waking up some tho and I need very little insulin to keep my blood sugar in check. I haven't taken any in several days. I do check my BS frequestnly, every 3-4 hours or so while awake. However, I do not follow a strict diabetic diet. I eat what I want when I want. I do find that I dont eat that much, I guess after taking in so little for so very long. I had the total in Cincinatti OH. It took about 10 hours, I was in the hospital for 2 weeks then had to spend another 2 weeks in town. I felt so much better almost immediately. I had post op pain of course, but none of the previous torture from that pancreas. Oh and btw they did have to remove my spleen as well. Eileen please make sure to take that Iron with OJ or a Vit C tablent. I started taking vitamins and minerals as soon as I was diagnosed after my first ercp and that was only about 2.5 years ago. I am a big proponet of dietary supplemention and feel that the vit and min supplements had a lot to do with how well I have recovered from all the surgeries and procedures I had done. Also I did have a really good doctor. If ya'll have any other questions, please dont hesitate to ask. Warmly, (SC)
