Guest guest
My son is biting his nails so badly that they are all severely in the quick and one has actually been chewed down to the CUTICLE! Telling him no does no good. Is there some product I can put on his fingernails to discourage biting?? This is a horrible bad habit. I don't know of any 4yr old that bite their nails like this. Thanks for your help, Pam, mom of Dillon ASD 4 yrs old SCD June 23, 2007
Guest guest
Dear Pam, I had the same problems with my son. According to my doctor in the UK this is a problem because of lack of minerals in his body. When you go swimming in the sea on a daily basis the nail biting often stops and will continue again after you stop the daily sea swimming. There are some supplements like seagreens which might help but Seagreens is not SCD legal. Any form of good bath mineral salt that you could try on a daily basis and let him soak in the bath as long as possible. Also what I have learned from a dentist and what worked for my son is that nailbiting and thumbsucking takes 3 months to break the habit. For my sons nailbiting I asked him what he wanted the most and his answer was a gameboy (which I hate) but I promised him one when he could stop I told him he has to grow all of his nails 3 times so that I had the cut them 3 times if he could do that he would get a gameboy. I didn't believe myself that he could do it but he did. (black mail maybe but it worked) Also th e thumbsucking stopped after I told him everyday for, I think it took me a little less than 3 months, to stop sucking his thumb and even sometimes had to pull out his tumb at night he managed to stop that habit. Hopefully this might be helpfull for you and your son. Guest guest
Where would be the best place to find a good bath mineral salt? What about an SCD mineral supplement? Is there one that someone could recommend? My son isn't taking any supplements now because I realized, even being SCD legal, they were making the diarrhea once. We are still stage 1 and it's been 3 mths. He's having bad stools again and I'm trying to figure out why. He probably couldn't take the minerals yet but it would be nice to have an idea of what I'd need to get down the road. I do want to get the bath salts and try them asap.
