Guest guest
Hi Suzi. Many years ago my GI doc told me that increased activity causes a rise in the pressures within the pancreatic ducts, thus increasing pain. Sadly, I have found this to be true. I was the kind of person who would handle pain - physical or emotional - by keeping busy doing things. I was dumb & fought " giving in " ; wasn't going to let pancreatitis dictate my lifestyle. Ha!!! I actually now have more control by accepting that my life will never be the same as it was. That life is gone, kaput, finis. I've accepted that almost nothing must happen at a time I've chosen; very little cannot wait. No more rigid schedules. All plans are flexible, dependent on how I'm feeling. As for other people.... Some understand & accept how I live now. They are the people I choose to be with. If others cannot understand why plans constantly change, well..... they are no big loss. I've actually gained a bit of pain control by not struggling against cutting short whatever I'm doing, by treating the pain promptly. It was hard to learn to take pain meds and lie down & rest when the pain started to become more than a " background noise " type of feeling. I've learned over the years that if I treat the pain early - as soon as I feel it rising - by taking OXY IR & lying down and practicing progressive muscle relaxation, there is a chance of aborting a major flair. The pain & nausea generally increase as long as I stay active. Hope this helps, Jan G Date: Thu, 18 Aug 2005 04:25:07 -0000 From: " Suzi " Subject: Re: hi to all, I am a new member and newly diagnosed....Amber Amber- Can I ask you where you are from? Just curious...I love to hike too...I live in Colorado. I seize my good days the best I can and try to get out and hike. I can honestly say that my activity level has gone way done over the last 2-3 years, I can't handle physical activity like I used to...wear out quicker and hurt more after a demanding walk/hike. I still insist on going and I do enjoy every minute of it...maybe it is old age??? :-) Maybe it is just the altitude? Hugs, Suzi B. Guest guest
Hi jang, I too have found that for me it helps very much to be self aware, treat promptly, and really curtail any activity at the hint of a biginning of a Panc. episode. While it does not work 100%,, I think that for me it works well enough to adopt my methods as part of my personal strategy. Fortunately, I have the capability to take the steps that I do and I have the personal latitude to choose my actions with this condition. Best wishes, Poncho - GA
