Guest guest
Hello! We are on day 3 of intro diet. My 5 yr old ASD son will not eat or drink: chicken broth with or without chicken and carrots chicken muffins beef broth white grape juice electrolyte drink white grape juice jello Today we gave him applesauce and pearsauce and 1/4 of a ripe banana which he ate each but not a lot of anything (maybe 1 cup total food). He drank probably 24 oz of water both days 1 and 2. He is not feverish. My husband, my 3 yr old have all been easily eating the above items and we removed all illegal items from the house. (My 3 yr old has no GI issues and we do let him drink whole milk which my 5 yr old does not or has not had a problem with ever.) He did have a formed BM on day one--first one ever. His GI issue is inflamation in his stomach and duodenum, but nothing severe in scope or pathology. He has taken Pentasa (4 months) for the inflamation, he has taken a course of Vancomycin since he has high Clostridia markers, we have been GFCFSoyFree for 2.5 years, etc. In the recent past we have used oxypowder to keep him regular. He has always gone days without a BM yet when he would finally go it was never formed and quite often explosive and mushy and he would strain so much to pass them. He often has distension and lays over furniture and on the floor and complains about his " ouchie belly " . Now he is upstairs crying because he dosen't have his apple juice (always diluted 50%)--this has been going on all weekend. We have been mostly SCD for the last month but we were using advanced foods and letting him drink his organic apple juice from Trader Joe's. I guess my question is has anyone had a similar experience and how long did it take your kids to eat anything? I am pretty tough and desperate for my son to have some GI relief, but at what point do I give in? (And when I mean give in, give him an SCD legal muffin made with almond or cashew butter?) Thanks in advance!
Guest guest
It takes different people different amounts of time to give in. And some don't. If you can stand it, the ones who don't have better results. You do realize the apple juice is illegal, right? Only apple cider (the brown kind that needs to be refrigerated even in the store) is legal. I see that out of desperation, you added 3 new foods in one day. You'll have a better idea of what your child can tolerate if you add only one new food at a time. Lots of people have been where you are. I hope some of them will post. Keep hanging in there. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/

Will he try some of that diluted? If you can't find some let me know and I'll get you a homemade recipe. <<I guess my question is has anyone had a similar experience and how > long did it take your kids to eat anything? (And when I mean give in, give him an SCD legal muffin > made with almond or cashew butter?)>> Since he did a couple of days of strict intro (just water) continue to add new foods but try to stick with peeled cooked fruits and veggies first. Since you tried a number of fruits it may be good to look at veggies now if possible. If you can wait a while before the nut goods it may help to continue firming up his stools. Is he still taking vancomycin? What foods was he eating before you redid the intro? If he just won't eat anything and you decide to try the nut muffins start with a small amount 1/4 muffin. Pecan or blanched almond nut muffins are easiest to tolerate. Guest guest
Hello! Oh, your post is so similar to mine back in January when we started. I remember, I did more crying than my daughter who was 19 months old. I was so scared that I was killing her. She refused any food or drink for at least 4 days. She drank from a bottle prior to the diet so I ran around buying a million different cups to see if she'd drink from any. No luck. I had to use a syringe to get her to take any liquids by mouth. Rest assured, this will not last. I'm sure your son will turn around and eat. At 5 years old, I'm sure he's used to his routine and breaking that is never easy. Some advise that I was given that really helped was to try butternut squash. We also started avocado really early since it's high in good fat. She eats that with just about every meal! I hope this helps! Cheryl Mother of Dorthia-Failure to Thrive, 29 months, SCD since Jan '07, and Alysson-ADHD, 5.5 years, Sugar-Free/modified SCD. > > Hello! > > We are on day 3 of intro diet. Guest guest
Thanks for all your replies!!! Today, day 4, was much better. He acually ate 5 bites of scrambled eggs(never ate before), water, applesauce for breakfast and approx. 1.5 oz of chicken meatballs (I cut them up and called them " mini nuggets " , applesauce (1/2 cup) and water for lunch. We are doing Thoughtful House's SCD guidelines and our dietician recommended only 2-3 days max on intro and she included applesauce and pear sauce on intro. But since I freaked out too late on Friday afternoon that I could not find the fruit listed on the intro in BTVC or pecanbread.com I held off on the fruit until day 3. He has not had applejuice, but I will google a recipe for homemade--what a great idea! I LOVE MESSAGE BOARDS!!! I was also panicking since he will not drink the grape juice or eat broth. I thought this was crucial to heal the gut. OK, so how many folks on this board have carpal from peeling everything? I'm only 4 days in and OUCH!!!! Seriously, thanks again for your replies!!!! pecanbread , " cherpod " wrote: > > Hello! > > Oh, your post is so similar to mine back in January when we started. > I remember, I did more crying than my daughter who was 19 months > old. Guest guest
Oh--I miswrote earlier--my 5 yr old has not had milk or any casein in 2.5 years. We do let my 3 year old (NT, no apparent GI issues) drink milk and what I meant is that my 5 yr old (autistic enterocolitis, ASD, etc.) does not have a problem with his little brother drinking milk. Thanks! > > Hi , > > <<We are on day 3 of intro diet. I LOVE MESSAGE BOARDS!!!>> There is a mulled apple juice recipe at : http://pecanbread.com/new/recipes/homemademulledapplejuice.html If you leave out the spices and just stick to apples and water, it will just make a juice. If you have a juicer then it is even easier. > I was also panicking since he will not drink the grape juice or eat > broth. I thought this was crucial to heal the gut. Nice options, but not having them won't delay healing as long as he has some legal carbs. <<OK, so how many folks on this board have carpal from peeling > everything? It peels, cores and slices in seconds. My kids who stopped eating apples for a while (sore loose teeth and gums) will eat the apples when they get to spin them through the peeler. After almost two years of use (quite a bit of use!) the blades are still wonderfully sharp.
