Hi

this is day 9 of SCD for my eight year old.He is very reluctant to

eat and very pale.He is complaining of abdominal pain and has a bad

cold-all good signs I know but I am struggling as he keeps begging

for carbs eg potatoes.I keep wondering if I am doing the right thing

as 3 yrs ago I put him on the SCD but he only made gains for the

first three months and then things just plateued(however we

continued for another thirteen months).

The reason I decided to retry SCD is that his GI problems have

deteriated this year and he has just recently been diagnosed with

Ileitis and acid reflux(he is on Pentasa and Omeprazole).I am so

worried that he is so painfully thin and small for his age and by

him not eating I am worried that he will just lose more weight.

I keep wondering that perhaps he didnt make gains after 3 months of

SCD last time due to levels of inflammation and that hopefully now

with a combination of SCD/medication things will finally improve.

I would be really grateful if anyone has any experiances of

medication and SCD.-I DONT WANT TO GIVE UP- but I " m not sure that I

am doing the right thing.

What foods is he eating?

Have you tried epsom salt baths to ease die off symptoms?

Sometimes the medications are needed to get inflamammtion down so

thet the diet can work effectively. Last year I had a lot of trouble

and had to go on steroids to reduce inflammation (caused by a

misdiagnosis and incorrect meds). I really did not want to go on the

steroids but they reduced the inflammation and with the diet I was

out of the hospital in record time. I quickly improved, put weight

back on (a wee bit too much) and successfully weaned off *all* meds-

steroids and sulfasalazine (under doctor's care).

Please keep us updated. :)

My heart goes out to you both....

My dd's GI, who has been a huge proponent of using the diet for his patients

with IBD, says that one of the ways we know it is working is that she is gaining

weight. She weighed 50 lbs when she first got sick, 1 1/2 years ago. She's now

above 65 and has gained several inches in height too! With medication and SCD,

she has done great.

This is in very sad contrast to good friends of ours whose daughter was

diagnosed shortly after our dd. She has a much milder case of Crohn's disease,

yet has not grown at all this year, poor thing, and has been started on Remicade

(which I will do just about anything to keep my dd off due to its incredibly

frightening side effects [like cancer]).

When dd started on the diet, we gave her a little treat every day. I went to

the Dollar Store and bought anything I thought might put a smile on her

face....Maybe there's something similar you can do for your son? Or a special

outing, like to a movie, that he might " earn " by, say, a week on the diet (chart

with stickers)?

I wonder if having done SCD before makes this, in some ways, harder for you both

b/c you're looking at everything long-term? For now, please just try to take it

day by day. If anyone had told me at the beginning, when my daughter was so

sick she had just been hospitalized a week, and then, when starting the diet,

had a HUGE period of refusing to eat, well, I never would have believed that now

she would be doing great and the diet is not much of a big deal at all :)

Hang in there.

Hi! We just learned that Zinc deficiency can alter taste and decrease appetite.

Kirkman has a line of capsulated vitamins that can be opened into food.

Hi Majidha,

<< he is eating chicken/carrot soup.homemade burgers

Are the skins on or off the peppers. Removing the skins may help

with the stomach aches. If he has any narrowing in the intestines

the skins may be be aggravating it cause inflammation and pain.

<<pear sauce>>

Peeled?

<<welchs grape jello,ripe bananas,avocado>>

If there were no peels in the above food try removing the avocado for

a few days. They are very good but kinda fibrous which may be

causing pain.

Hi, Majidha

I didn't think to take the skins off peppers at first either, but when

I started, I found that steaming the peppers or roasting/putting under

broiler (until skins are black) were good ways to get the skin off

fairly easily.
