Guest guest
My 7 yr old autistic son will be starting the SCDiet in about 2 wks, after he recovers from rectal prolapse surgery. I have many questions! He is also GFCF, and is actually medically, mildly allergic to milk. What kind of yohgurt can I feed him? Made with what " milk " product? And is the recipe the same? Do kids on the SCD do GFCF and what kind of yohgurt do they use? Also, my son has pica and eats lots of outdoor stuff like grass, dirt, leaves, etc. Of course I try to minimalize this, or stop him any chance I get, but it is a constant craving for him. I know this is crazy.....but it this going to malaffect the SCDiet? Are these things not SCD safe?
Guest guest
Welcome to the group k.2525, <<My 7 yr old autistic son will be starting the SCDiet in about 2 wks, > after he recovers from rectal prolapse surgery. Made with what " milk " > product?>> On SCD we make our own yogurt. You can make it with cow goat, sheep or nut milk. Lots of info at http://pecanbread.com/new/yogurt1.html http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/beginners_guide/yoghurt/yoghurt. htm <<And is the recipe the same? Do kids on the SCD do GFCF and > what kind of yohgurt do they use?>> SCD is actually more GF than GFCF. It allows no starches of any kind. Many kids here use goat yogurt, some use nut milk yogurt, some use cow yogurt. <<Also, my son has pica and eats lots of outdoor stuff like grass, dirt, > leaves, etc. Of course I try to minimalize this, or stop him any > chance I get, but it is a constant craving for him. Guest guest
Hi Sheila, I went to this site. It came up with empty search boxes. Does eating ice chips a lot mean PICA? Guest guest
Hi, Eating ice is usually a sign of low iron in the body. I know SCDer's shouldn't do iron but that is usally a sign of needing more iron. Beth UC Re: Re: Brand new to this.... Hi Sheila, I went to this site. It came up with empty search boxes. Guest guest
--- I have had Crohn's since I was 36 (now 45). I had a parital colectomy last May - by October I couldnt get enough ice down me! I craved it ...my aunt said at Thanksgiving I am aneimic - I blew it off - went for my annual in April - had usualy cbc's - the doctor said I was so aniemic she didnt know why I didn't have a stroke!! You may be anemic - get thy to a lab and get your blood drawn and tested. I was 12 days straight on an iron drip....happy to report my marrow is now producing red blood cells. good luck! Cherie 45 yrs. (Crohns disease since 1998) mom to Connor and 14 yr old twins with Autism and daughter - delightfully healthy!
Guest guest
A lot of my son's mouthing of objects STOPPED when we started SCD as the yeast started to become under control! My son tends to have " real " PICA during die-off; he once shoved a whole handful of sand in his mouth twice on day we were trying a natural antifungal agent. You may want to have activated charcoal around, especially during the beginning phases of the diet, as this will soak up toxins before they enter the bloodstream. PICA can be a sign of low minerals such as zinc and/or iron. You may want to have these levels tested and supplement as necessary based on the findings. If none of the above helps the PICA, you may also want to have his lead levels checked b/c I have heard that PICA can be a sign of lead poisoning. Good luck with everything; I have a feeling this diet will really help your child.
Guest guest
Hi Debbie, <<> I went to this site. It came up with empty search boxes.>> Long links often get broken up in Yahoo. You may have to copy and paste it in pieces in a new window << Does eating ice> chips a lot mean PICA?>> From wikipedia " Pica is an appetite for non-nutritive substances (e.g., coal, soil, chalk, paper etc.) or an abnormal appetite for some things that may be considered foods, such as food ingredients (e.g., flour, raw potato, starch). In order for these actions to be considered pica, they must persist for more than one month, at an age where eating such objects is considered developmentally inappropriate. Guest guest
Thanks, I was craving almond flour a lot but that has stopped--I think it was the salt I had in it. I also stay anemic a lot so the ice probably has something to do with that. I don't eat anything else on a regular basis like that. Debbie > > Hi Debbie, > > <<> I went to this site.
