Guest guest
Hello all, today marks two weeks on SCD for my 13 year old daughter with Aspergers. What have we got so far? -increased eye contact -headbanging GONE/severely reduced. Have not seen this behaviour in days. -more smiles, she says she's happier -she's initiating conversations. EVEN WHEN UPSET. Wow. I overheard the other day, her speaking with her 11 year old sister: " Why do you always act that way? It's so weird! Don't you know you are weird when you act that way? " ....well, a bit of the pot calling the kettle black, but also, it was a very normal type conversation for an annoyed 13 year old to be having with an annoying 11 year old. I was thrilled. -unexpected quips and comments and a sense of humor about the daily things in life. -tolerated a long trip to Walmart (her least favorite place ever) with me yesterday with nary a complaint, panic attack or anything. -Did I mention she's initiating conversations? Eyecontact? I'm so thrilled! Thrilled I say! And it's only going to get better, I'm sure. Alana Sheldahl

Guest guest
Alana, That is just spectacular! And thank you for reporting it! It's reports like yours -- and all the myriad other triumphs we see -- that make it worthwhile for the moderators and other assistants on this list! Guest guest
Alana Your posting is just what I needed. My twin 14 year old (Austim) boys and I (crohns) have been on the diet for 5 days - it's tough - cannot get the broth down at all - just some of the chicken - but have been strict on everything else - and it's been hard...but your note is just what I needed to carry on...did your daughter drink all the broth??? What was your secret to getting it down?? Congratulations and continued great success! And - I too long for typical spats between my children as well!!! Guest guest
Dear Cherie, My son (9 year old) ASD is not big on any kind of broth at all. He never drank any and yet he has shown remarkable improvement. I don't know how you are feeling about the yogurt, but I started it after about 6 weeks (he was cf/gf for 2+ yrs) As soon as I slowly introduced it (1/8 teasp at a time) he started showing dramatic improvement. He's up to over a cup a day now. My son just tested out of his life skills class and has entered a " regular " classroom but with a higher student/teacher ratio. The school district told me that they have never had a child progress from the life skills class (requires an under 55 IQ to be eligible) to a " normal " class environment. In the past few days we discovered that he is reading above his grade level (3rd) & he is doing great in math. His impulse control , language and hyperactivity issues were so severe before. It is truly a miracle. He is even negotiating with me on bedtimes and such! Keep up the diet. Even if there are variations (within the guidelines) it will still work. My son still can't have nuts, cheese & many vegetables due to salicyclate issues--and it still works! Please feel free to contact me offline anytime for info or just a sympathetic ear. Keli son, Ben ASD SCD since 5/07 Re: Two week update Alana Your posting is just what I needed. Thank you so much for writing into the list with this update - it really helps show that going through those tough first days is worth it. Elaine wrote that the carrots should be pureed for the intro. I always make it this way when I have redone the intro - it is easier to digest when the carrots ar pureed. For those who don't like the carrots pureed or whose children won't eat them pureed they can have it seperately.
