Guest guest
Hi, I am just wondering if 5-Hydroxytrytophan (griffonia simplicifolia seed extract) is legal? we are going to use this to help with my daughter's sleeping problem. Melatonin is illegal in the diet list but how come Kirkman melatonin is legal? Thanks in advance. Lina Mum

Guest guest
Hi Lina, <<Hi, I am just wondering if 5-Hydroxytrytophan (griffonia simplicifolia > seed extract) is legal? we are going to use this to help with my > daughter's sleeping problem.>> Please have a look at http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/pecanbread/message/51002 <<Melatonin is illegal in the diet list but > how come Kirkman melatonin is legal? Thanks in advance.>> The website needs to be changed. from Pecanbread Message #21924 From Elaine: " I do not know enough about melatonin to comment. The entire hormonal system as well as the immune system is, of course, messed up in children who have not been absorbing nutrients (vitamins, minerals, etc.). After a time on SCD, it is very possible that melatonin will not be necessary. If it is keeping you from losing IT, of course, keep using it. Guest guest
Hi, Lina, There seems to be a problem finding 5-HTP without added illegals. We don't exactly know why the melatonin is listed as illegal on the BTVC website. It may have something to do with impurities. The webmaster over there is a volunteer and has not yet replied to Marilyn's question about the melatonin. Melatonin is very helpful to many and we think we can trust the Kirkman product. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/
Guest guest
I believe 5HTP is legal, as long as no symptoms arise when you begin taking it that might show an intolerance to the source. i just got a message on the low adrenal yahoo group that they find l- tryptophan more effective than 5htp. " I too recommend L-trytophan. It's safer than 5HTP and more effective. Try it with melatonin. L- Tryp should be taken an hour before bed on an empty stomach. GABA is another substance that increases serotonin and helps with sleep " I have been taking a wonderful blend that I like... not huge amounts of Melatonin.. its scd legal... called SOMESTA. with only 1mg melatonin, B6, L-tryptophan, chamomile, valerian, inositol, mg, niacin, and 100% daily dose of vit C! if i take 3 mg melatonin, that really knocks me out. 1mg is just enough so that i dont even realize it is working. it doesnt knock me out, but i sleep soundly. i prefer this blend. i read a medical study some months ago saying that something around 1 mg is all a person should need for beneficial results. i do not recommend 3 mg, unless absolutely necessary. by the way, a few months ago i asked about melatonin being legal. it seems that a lot of people dont encourage melatonin, encouraging people to let their bodies heal through diet and that everything will naturally go back to order and start working again by itself. I believe melatonin is fine if it is needed... but it IS a steroid and it could have side effects that we dont know of now... so i am using it now until we get healthy enough for our serotonin levels to get to normal. -kelly scd since april biochem student

Guest guest
According to BTVC, small amounts of inositol in supplements are legal. " Inositol is a sugar alcohol. Sugar alcohols will feed bacteria and that is something we do not want to do. Sugar alcohols generally cause diarrhea but small amounts in supplements are ok - Elaine " Almost all of our B vitamins contain inositol. I wasnt aware of chamomile being illegal. I cant find it on the illegal list on BTVC. Thanks for letting me know. We will need to stop drinking Cham. tea then. Doesnt leave us with many choices... Do you know if Roiboos tea is legal? Thanks -
Guest guest
Hi , <<I wasnt aware of chamomile being illegal. I cant find it on the > illegal list on BTVC.>> The only herbal tea that's legal is peppermint. I make tea from fresh grated ginger and sometimes make my own chai (cinnamon, ginger etc..). Orange pekoe and black tea is fine. (Includes earl grey, English breakfast). Chamomile tea can cause GI upset. <<> Do you know if Roiboos tea is legal?>> Sorry, but no.
