Guest guest
Hi all, I check this group each day for info and love all the great information. I know my kind of problems have already been posed in a variety of different ways but I still feel the need to put a post just to see what kind of response I get for my particular situation. Our three year old son is autistic. We have been on the diet approximately 13 weeks and are trying our best to get our son to eat less nut flour and sweet (foods with honey and vanilla) foods. The problem is, he will not. He only, and I mean only, will eat vanilla ice cream (from the healing little tummies scd legal cookbook) and blueberry muffins. I believe that he has a yeast problem due to his cravings for sweets. Prior to the SCD diet, he did eat vegetables and some protein. Currently, he refuses vegetables completely and gets meat protein from ground up chicken that I put in his ice cream. We have tried a lot of different recipes and will continue to do this but right now we are at our wits end. We have no choice but to keep feeding him these foods. In the past couple weeks, he has improved behaviorally and socially and has gained weight. I understand this is good, however, our concern is that his bowel movements continue to be very, very wet and grainy (from the nuts I'm sure). Is this O.K. due to the fact that he is improving behaviorally. That does mean that he's getting the proper nutrition, right? I just wonder will he ever have normal bowel movements? It is very upsetting to see this day to day. Sorry this is a long post. We are at our wits end for a variety of reasons including these stresses. Just needed any encouragement and help. Thanks very much.
Guest guest
We had this problem too. We made popsicles out of fruit puree with vegetables mixed in too. Purple string beans and spinach worked well mixed in and one banana mixed in always made it sweet. I started using less and less honey in our foods and replaced its sweetness with apple sauce or cider. The probiotic helped get rid of the sweet craving too.We ate mostly posicles for the entire month of August. I added a good multivitamin too their diet and CLO to cover all our bases. Good luck. help and/or encouragement > Hi all, > > I check this group each day for info and love all the great > information. Guest guest
Despite the behavioral improvements, the foods he is eating do not constitute a balanced, healthy diet. By his BMs we can see that your son is not tolerating what he is eating. I know this sounds really, really blunt, but your son eats ice cream and muffins because you make them for him. Many have gone cold turkey to the intro diet and waited out the child. Of course he will fuss/melt-down but you will be doing the best thing for him. Some parents have caved and gone to an all-legal diet without the intro and without adding just one food at a time, with plenty of meat, veggies, and fruits. Those parents often go back and do the intro later and get better results. You really do need to do the intro to see the best results. The intro will starve out bad gut bugs. Then you will need to slowly add more vegetables and fruits. Please go and freeze the nuts for use several months down the road. You can do it. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/04 > > Hi all, > > I check this group each day for info and love all the great > information. The wet grainy stools may mean he is not ready for the nut flour or blueberries. What kinds of recipes have you tried? <<Is this O.K. due to the fact that he is improving > behaviorally. That does mean that he's getting the proper nutrition, > right?>> It may be better than what he ate preSCD or at least he has improved enough to better absorb nutrients from the legal foods he is now eating. If it is only ice cream and muffins I think there he may need sources of vitamins like fruits, veggies . Until he will accept more variety I think he should get vitamins elsewhere. You can supplement with a multi or try juicing (strained for pulp &diluted). The best of course is a larger varity of fruits & veggies because it supplies dietary fiber along with nutrients. <<I just wonder will he ever have normal bowel movements? It is >> I think you are on the way to normal bm's, as indicated by the behaviour and social improvements, you just having to keep working at it.
