Guest guest
Hi all, I've recently started to experiment with enzymes for myself (Houston line), and I'm curious if anyone has had any issues with bloating, body aches and irritability when starting out. The inserts say increased hyperactivity and change in bowel movements, but nothing about what I'm experiencing. Would love your feedback. Guest guest
Hi Tara, I started out with 1/2 of the recommended dose but had to go with 1/4 because I had gas etc.. Reducing the amount and slowly increasing it eliminated those symptoms for me. Guest guest
Thanks, Sheila. Did you also have body aches and irritability? Just not at all what I was expecting. Also, do you recall at what rate you increased? Guest guest
Hi Tara, <<Thanks, Sheila. Did you also have body aches and irritability?>> I don't recall (it was a few years ago) but it is possible I did. <<Just not at all what I was expecting. Also, do you recall at what rate you > increased?>> Once I was okay with 1/4 capsule I think I did it for a week or so , then I doubled to 1/2 a capsule for a week and I think I eventually did a full capsule 1-2 weeks after that for a while. You have to 'listen' to your body and go as fast as it will let you. Sheila, SCD Feb. 2001, UC 23yrs, PCOD 22yrs mom of and
Guest guest
Hi, Did I read crohn's shouldn't use enzymes or is that ok once you have a lot of healing. Guest guest
Thanks, Sheila. I'll give that a try. What brand of enzymes do/did you use? Guest guest
Sorry, also meant to ask if that was with each meal that you dosed, or per day until you were able to get up to a full capsule with each meal? Guest guest
Crohn's is not my area of expertise, but I think you may be referring to posts from Sheila and from Antoinette about staying away from enzymes if there are ulcerations in the gut--the enzymes would cause pain. But if there are no ulcerations, the enzymes can be helpful. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/
Guest guest
Yes, I recall that as well. And to expound on that, I believe it's proteases that Elaine was most concerned with where there are ulcerations. Guest guest
Hi Tara, <<Thanks, Sheila. I'll give that a try. What brand of enzymes do/did > you use? > > Tara > > CD - 25yrs/ileostomy - 15yrs > SCD since 11/06>> I tried Candex for a while and then switched to Candizyme (available here in Canada). I used them initially for yeast. In the past year since my yeast has been very good (they are behaving nicely) I stopped taking them at bedtime/empty stomach for yeast. I also started taking S. boulardii at bedtime and you can't take both at the same time - the enzymes kill the good S. boulardii. Instead, I started taking them with meals to aid digestion (last Fall). I recently stopped the enzymes because my digestion has improved greatly. I did the same with probiotics and when I restarted yogurt. When I started taking the enzymes with meals I started with a quarter of a capsule at lunch and at supper. I didn't usually take it with breakfast because I didn't have much problem with my usual breakfast fare - eggs, canned salmon and/or bacon. If I had fruit or veggies then I'd take it for Breakfast also. The highest I increased was half a capsule at mealtime , but the Candizyme is pretty high in the their enzymatic units and that dose worked for me.
