Guest guest
Hi everyone- I have a question regarding probiotic supplementation with bifidobacterium. My daughter, Chloe, has been on the diet for 3 months and eating the goat yogurt with 2 capsules a day of the SCDophilus. A recent lab test showed that her Lactobacillus levels were great but that she had no bifidobacterium. Should I supplement with bifidobacterium? Also-I've been looking and looking and can't find any that's SCD legal. Does anyone know of any? Additionally, my daughter was found to have bad bacteria-staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella Oxytoca. Does anyone know of a good, but gentle natural antibacterial that's gentle on the stomach and won't kill off the good bacteria? I'd hate to start all over again. My daughter has severe gastritis and small bowel disease. I appreciate anyone's help/input. Thanks so much everyone! Sally (mom to Chloe- 4 y.o., ASD, small bowel disease, gastritis, SCD 7/07 and Rhys, 2-ASD, SCD-9/07).
Guest guest
check out http://www.customprobiotics.com/ <http://www.customprobiotics.com/> for SCD legal probiotics. I'm curious about the answers you get. My son has the same problem--labs show no bifido growth at all, so I've been giving him some dispite the SCD position on Bifido. Guest guest
*Sheila's Comments Regarding *bifidum bacteria " The VSL#3 is illegal and I certainly don't recommend it. [VSL#3 contains bifidum bacteria ] I've consulted with a few people who have gone into massive flares after trying the VSL#3. Also I know lots who have had major problems with bifidum bacteria (especially when on SCD). Perhaps it is because the SCD clears out the harmful microbes and bifidum takes over, overgrowing into huge numbers. The by-products of bifidum bacteria could be what sends people into flares - especially those who have sensitive guts or those at the beginning of the diet, these people unfortunately have " fertile ground " for bifidum bacteria to overgrow. Guest guest
Thanks Holly for the website. I'm curious to know-any ill effects at all from the bifido supplementation? Which bifido supp. are you using? How much do you give him a day, when and how often? Thanks so much for your response. It's so appreciated! A > recent lab test showed that her Lactobacillus levels were great but > that she had no bifidobacterium. Lots of companies are adding it to their food. <<Also-I've been looking and looking and can't find any > that's SCD legal. Does anyone know of any? Does anyone know of a good, but gentle natural antibacterial>> I don't know if gentle antibacterials will have much effect on these. Oil of Oregano may help (it is strong and strong tasting (not bad tasting just intense)) so you can dilute it in juice or water. Please have a look at this post: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/pecanbread/message/59162 If you use this just to be onthe safe side take all probiotics, yogurt etc.. a few hours apart from any antibacterial treatment. Guest guest
Thanks Sheila for the info. I appreciate all your help. Chloe is doing well albeit a bit stimmy since starting the yogurt-so I think I'll just let things stay as they are and not give the bifido supp. Regarding her bad bacteria, can the diet alone eventually kill or control her bad bacteria including the Staph or do I need to treat it? Her doctor recommended Viracin- which is made from plant tannin extracts from the Acerin fruit and Canaigre root. I tried it, but she started acting kinda silly and foggy on it, so I discontinued it. I'll try the Oil of Oregano if the diet won't help with her bad bugs.
