An MRCP can confirm pancreatitis. It shows the same areas of the pancreas and biliary system that the ERCP does, but is non-invasive. Any good gastroenterologist normally consents to this procedure prior to an ERCP, since it doesn't carry any risk of a post-procedure panceatitis attack like the ERCP does. The reason some doctors prefer to do the ERCP is that if there are obstructions that can be stented, this procedure can be done immediately during the ERCP, so it saves time. A secretin test can also confirm pancreatitis, but this is a test that is only available in select number of US hospitals, so it's not widely available. With love, hope and prayers, Heidi Heidi H.
