Guest guest
Hi Allan Please forgive me if my question seems naive, but what exactly is pectin? I know as soon as You tell me, I will go ah!!! Right now my daughter could live off of apples and Peanut Butter if I let her., and I have not been peeling them. So, that has always been a sign to me that if they LOVE it, they probably shouldn't have it! Thanks for keeping the newbie's in the loop!!! Christy Mae 5yr SCD16 days!!! [sPAM] Re: Fruit and honey Hi , Hi , I thought I'd put in my two cents worth. Our experience has been that the only fruit we've ever had problems with has been apples. (I guess we need to keep reminding ourselves to cut the peels off thickly enough to eliminate the pectin.) Our Gen has trouble with any more than one apple per day. Otherwise, fruit has been his favorite treat! (He's even requested a decorative fruit platter instead of an SCD birthday cake when birthday time came around.) With honey, we've had enough trouble that we went and found a nearby beekeeper who sends us a jar every so often. I suspect the large brand honey companies no longer know what goes into the honey they pack. (Most of it comes from abroad now, and so it makes it a lot more difficult for them to keep track of the various different pro- ducers, and quality. ) The bottom line for us has been that if something has gone wrong, it usually is because we've forgotten something in the protocol, and need to review the material. Vigilance! Starve those nasty gutbugs! -Allan.
Guest guest
Christy, Pectin is naturally occuring in apples, near the skin. When it's added to foods it makes them kind of gel. So any added pectin is illegal. After saying that though, since your daughter is new to the diet, everything in the beginning is to be peeled, seeded and cooked. She shouldn't be eating raw apples yet. Remember what the body can't digest does harm. She could be wanting it because it's feeding the bad bacteria. About peanut butter, this shouldn't be eaten (if ever) until very much later on in the diet.
