Guest guest
Hi all, Our son has been on SCD approximately 15 weeks. Prior to that, he was GF/CF for 3 months so he has been off dairy and grains for almost 7 months. We feel he is ready to move to yogurt. Someone recommended sheeps yogurt bought from a company called Old Chatham Farms (www.blacksheepcheese.com). My question is, is it O.K. to give him this yogurt or is that a no-no. Is only homemade yogurt allowed? We tried to make yogurt but it didn't turn out so good. Also, when can I give him cheese? He is not eating very much right now and I know it would help vary his diet if I could introduce cheese. Thanks.
Guest guest
Hi, , You must make homemade yogurt. The 24 hour fermentation is crucial to consuming all of the lactose. Commercial yogurts do not ferment long enough. Also the Old Chatham yogurt contains illegal strains of probiotic. You can try cheese now (aged at least 30 days), but as always only try one new thing at a time, starting with small amounts. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/
Guest guest
Hi , My local goat milk purveyor has started making goat cheese. It is fermented more than 24hours, but less than 30days. The photograph reminds me of a well dripped yogurt. It is apparently very soft, and made only with goats milk and My son has been SCD for almost 4 years, and had really only 3 (early on) slip-ups. I asked about the probiotics that were used for the cheese, and he gave me the product name of a mass produced starter usually used by dairies to make cheese using cows milk. Do we proceed carefully, or give it a miss. The chese looks like an excellent substitute for mascarpone, but needless to say, we are waiting for a green light. Any input would be appreciated. -Allan. Guest guest
Hi, Allan, This cheese is illegal. Soft cheeses have about half the lactose of milk, which is still a lot of lactose. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/
