Ok, I keep hearing all these different things about the listening

programs.....and I'm beginning to wonder if our program has affected our son

negatively. He became more hyper after we removed dairy, but has become

unbearable in the last couple of weeks with hitting and kicking. We had changed

to a new disc during that time, as well. Could there be a connection? Anyway,

we've stopped the disc about a week ago and he's still at it.....hitting and

kicking more and more each day. I know he's been in the house waaaaaaay too

much recently due to colds and bad weather, so I'm not downplaying that

connection. We also tried a homeopathic remedy during that time prescribed by

our homeopath, so I thought THAT could be the culprit. He also seems to have

made some cognitive leaps during this time.....he's processing information

better, engaging in conversation and expanded his vocabulary, so maybe that's

the deal. I'm still a little overwhelmed by some of our current dietary changes,

so I haven't looked at the dietary impact of some of his " regular " food, yet

(picky eater). I'm starting him on a different multi-vitamin from Kirkmans as

soon as it comes in. And I have a NEW appointment with a NEW DAN! doctor (in

about one week) I'm very excited about this one. The last one was an absolute

nightmare! I'm very glad to see that my last DAN is NOT listed on the updated

DAN list.

(I know I'm all over the place with this message) But, I don't think I ever

actually shared my bad DAN experience with this group.....and since I have a new

appointment next week, perhaps I should.....in case my expectations for all DANs

are " crazy " .....BUT, I visited a DAN doc a couple of months ago seeking

assistance/supervision over the supplements that I'd like to give my son, as

well as alternative vaccines. Since this was right in the middle of the

McCarthy book tour, the issue was plastered EVERYWHERE.....so I've been

reluctant to persue traditional vaccines. Anyway, I stopped the vaccines when my

son had his 12 month shots and stopped all babbling and jargon type speech. I

noticed the change immediately and pointed it out to my husband. At that point,

I postponed his final two vaccines: Hep A and MMR. So, when I heard there were

alternatives, I sought answers. There were several things about this particular

doctor that I found unsettling, but the final blow was when he informed me (in a

very stern voice) that he did not provide alternative vaccines (not cost

effective), and that if something happened to my son, it would be my fault. I

know that choosing to postpone vaccines has risks, but I've ALWAYS made

decisions based on helping my baby.....Something has just always told me to stay

away from the MMR (even from day one, when I had very little knowledge about any

of this stuff). I am so much more concientious than the average mom, and when

this man said this to me, I felt like I'd been ripped open--completely open.

Not even my traditional pedetrician has ever said anything like that to me. I

love my child more than anything in the world, and these decisions have been the

toughest decisions I've ever made. I became very depressed for quite a while

afterward. Just thought I share this experience.....I'm actually just now able

to talk about it.

Hi -

In re the listening therapy - first let me say your little guy has a whole lot

going on - new diet, new supplements, new vitamins, listening therapy, inside

with the weather - right there it's a lot to absorb.

Second, though, yes the CDs can affect the kids in all sorts of ways but your

OT or therapist with whom you are working should be able to tell you that ahead

of time or as an explanation when it happens. Our OT told us that when we got

to disc 4 (or something like that- it's been a while), he might get a bit more

aggressive. When Josh did the sensory learning program, the therapist was very

careful to tell me what to watch out for with different music in the listening

portion and different colors in the vision portion of the program.

So, in that regard, I really hope you're working with a reputable therapist

doing the listening therapy (it really scares the bejeepers out of me when I

read about parents doing the listening program with no guidance - this is a

child's brain, neurological synapses, and life we're dealing with - having

professional guidance should be the first thing on a parent's mind!).

But, back to Josh's reactions to the CDs- sure enough, when we got to the 4th

disc, he was OK for about a day and a half, then he would start crying

uncontrollably. The next morning, he woke up, stood up next to his bed, pulled

his pants down and peed on the bedroom floor! Needless to say, I called the OT

immediately and she had him come in - we switched back to the first CD, which

was much more calming, and he was fine within another day and a half - we wound

up skipping that one CD and moving on to others - one of the other benefits of

working with a good therapist - they can figure out the sequence that is best

for your child. One of the CDs in combination with the color sequencing on the

vision therapy during the sensory learning program did make him a bit more

aggressive but he worked through it very quickly and was fine within only a

couple of days.

Also, whenever Josh is on the verge of a developmental breakthrough (and I

never know what that step is!) he becomes more aggressive - has always done that

since he was a baby and he's 9 1/2 now! I'm not sure why he does that but I

remember a caregiver saying one time (when Josh was a baby) that she had seen

that type of behavior on occasion in other kids as well.

So, hope the listening therapy answer helped somewhat.

Thanks for this information....I'm going to talk to my ot, though. I didn't

know AT ALL what I was doing, and I did the discs out of sequence, and probably

just did them wrong. When things go awry, can they be reversed?? I didn't

really have any guidance with it at all.
