Guest guest
I see from several SCD-related sites that you can make yogurt in the larger model of the Excalibur Dehydrator. I don't have either appliance and so was thinking I'd just buy the high-end Excalibur and skip the yogurt maker. Does anyone see a real advantage to making yogurt using a yogurt maker vs. a dehydrator? Any compelling reason why you'd want both appliances? Thanks, Rose
Guest guest
The dehydrator is actually better at making yogurt from what I've heard, because it is easier to keep it at the right temp. Many of the yogurt makers have issues with getting too hot over the 24 hour period, even the highly recommended yogourmet. So I'd say if you can afford the dehydrator, you'll get the most bang for your buck with that. I don't think you'd miss not having a yogurt maker at all if you had the excalibur. I wish I had the money for one! I'm saving up and can't wait to ditch my yogurt maker, LOL (I'll be giving it to a friend who wants to start SCD, not really ditching it, LOL). Guest guest
Wow thanks for this post I have been researching the same thing and I am saving up for one too, as of right now. The versatility struck me, being able to do the fruit and veg (later for us), and then I saw it say you can do yoghurt in it too. Thanks Kylie<< If you get the dehydrator for yogurt be sure to put your yogurt jars into a water bath and monitor the temp of the water bath. The first time I tried to use the dehydrator I just put my jars into the dehydrator and threw a thermometer into the oven to verify the temp and I don't think it worked right cause the yogurt was VERY watery and the temp was set pretty low to keep a air temp of 110F. The next time I put the jars in a water bath and put the therm into the water bath. I had to put the temp dial on the dehrdrator up a lot more to keep the water at 110F. The yogurt came out soooo much better this way. It wasn't watery at all. I don't think the air temp in the dehrdrator is the same as the temp in the yogurt jars at all. I think you need a higher air temp to get the product up to 110F. Also I think yogurt just likes to be incubated in a water bath. Maybe it is just gentler on the cultured organisms. Guest guest
When you get your dehydrator, DON'T dry the garlic in EVERY tray at once. The smell will run you out of the house for weeks if the garlic is strong enough! I will mix it with trays of other things from now on. <laugh> Bonita Re: Need a yogurt maker if have Excalibur 2900? Guest guest
Hi Guess what, i just order from Nesco website a dehydrator that I can make yogurt out of it as what recommended by the saleslady and not really so expensive but the problem is what told that i have to provide my own container that is at least up to 1' high in order to fit into the dehydrator trays, my question is what kind of container do you use to put in the dehydrator? where can i get this container? Any suggestions? lina > > The dehydrator is actually better at making yogurt from what I've > heard, because it is easier to keep it at the right temp. Guest guest
Hi Lina. I'm really not sure what would fit properly in the dehydrator that you ordered. I am planning on using mason jars (1 quart size) in the excalibur dehydrator. Not sure if those would fit in yours or not. Two Yogourmets and two Excalibur 2900s. (The second Yogourmet was sort-of an accident: it was sent to me by an SCD friend because I forgot to pack mine when evacuating for Hurricane Katrina. Hey, I took the four liters of yogurt I'd just dripped... I wasn't planning on being away for five weeks!) I bought the Yogourmet when I started the diet, because the 2900 was a big outlay for me, and I wanted to see if the diet was going to work before committing that much money to it. SCD worked, and I was having a terrible time keeping enough yogurt on hand, because dry curd cottage cheese (DCCC) wasn't available here. I was making yogurt almost every day! So I got the dehydrator as a belated Christmas present. Within a very short time, I was using the dehydrator for so many things besides just yogurt (like drying meringue cookies, drying crackers, making meat snacking sticks, etc, etc, etc.) that I was back to making yogurt in the Yogourmet and forever running out. So I bought a second dehydrator. (Oh, and a storage cabinet which sits in the dining room with the dehydrators on top and all my storage containers and STUFF underneath.) Your needs may vary -- but if I had a choice today of a Yogourmet vs an Excalibur dehydrator, I'd get the dehydrator. A yogurt maker does one thing well: makes yogurt. Keeps the vampires away! What I usually do is two trays of garlic, two trays of onion, two trays of green peppers, two trays of sliced mushrooms and a tray of whatever else occurs to me, often some pepperoni sticks. Then the whole house smells like a pizza! — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
