Guest guest
Hi. We have been doing the diet for about a week and a half and all of the sudden Henry is craving salt. He has never asked about/for salt before and now will eat it plain (seriously, he is asking to eat salt). He has been doing very well though he has asked for his old foods back. We did the intro diet for 4 days and he is now also eating some winter squash, baked apple and pear sauces (and watered down apple juice made from juice drained from the sauce after I puree it -- I froze it in ice cube trays and add a cube or two to water). Also, he did not have a BM today at all, which is the first time I can recall that he has not had 2-3 BMs a day in years... Any thoughts on the salt craving??? Kim, mom to Henry, 7.75, language-based learning disorder, some crohn's markers, GI inflammation, esophogeal esinophils, multiple bouts of h.pylori, enterocolitis. Guest guest
Hi Kim, I am glad to hear that your son. is showing a few TEMPORARY signs of regression. This is a sign that the bacterias are dying. Many bacterias contain toxins inside their bacterial walls. When the bacterias die then the toxins are released in massive amounts. Constipation is one of the symptoms of bacterial toxins so I am not surprised to hear that your son has an increase of that during the die off period of the diet. I have never heard about salt cravings being caused by bacterial toxins, but I did read about bacterial toxins causing alcohol cravings. You might want to read more about bacterial toxins on this website: www.microbialinfluence.com To read more about the temporary symptoms that may occur during the beginning of the diet and how to deal with them: http://www.pecanbread.com/new/temporarysymptoms.html (That website section will soon be revised) Mimi > Hi. Guest guest
When the kids switch to eating homemade foods, they are consuming so much less salt than they used to be and it's natural to want to replace that salty taste they are used to. In addition, there seem to be many, many children on the autism spectrum who have salt cravings. It has not been explained. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/
Guest guest
Thanks... I wondered if other kids had experienced this as well since it was so sudden and striking with Henry. We have been making probably 80%-90% of his foods on GFCF anyway because he has so many food sensitivities so there was not a big switch away from packaged foods with a lot of salt (b/c there was very little packaged food avail. that he could even try). He has always preferred " salty " to sweet but has never asked us to put salt on or in anything for him. This heightened desire for salt seems to have come on very suddenly. thanks again! Guest guest
Hi, The salt craving can be adrenal glands needing support and/or thyroid needing support. So the endocrine system is out of balance. Salt also cleanses and balances the PH in the body. Let him eat it. Just make sure you get a good salt like a product called " real salt " or " celtic sea salt " . These are natural salts and he will get trace amounts of other minerals too. These salts don't have any aluminum added in them. Most salts add aluminum to make the salt not clump and stick together. You can get these salts at a health food store. Guest guest
I think it is that his body needs the minerals in salt. Make sure you have a good sea salt that his body can use. His body will regulate it on his own as his digestion improves. Pearl Kim wrote: Thanks... I wondered if other kids had experienced this as well since it was so sudden and striking with Henry. Guest guest
Thanks Pearl & Beth... this does make lots of sense. We use Hylands BIO-XII, which is a homeopathic remedy of cell salts (he has been on this awhile) and for food salts we use Celtic salt and himalayan salt. Sounds like he may be in imbalance as his body adapts to SCD? I might send an email to his homepath as well to get their thoughts...Kim > > Hi, > The salt craving can be adrenal glands needing support and/or thyroid needing support. Guest guest
Garlic salt may have starch in it to prevent caking. You should write to the company and ask for confirmation that no starch or sugar is in the salt. Ask for a hand-written letter on company letterhead. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/

Elaine cautioned about using any salt (Kosher or sea salt) without iodine because some people don't get enough iodine naturally. If you want to use the salts without iodine make sure you get enough either in your diet (fish, yogurt, eggs, strawberies ...) or through supplements.
