Guest guest
Just a quick suggestion for those of you who can't give your kid baked goodies ... For 2 years now I have made my boy a paper cake, a round cake made up of 12 paper boxes shaped like slices. You can decorate these and put candles on top and party favors for guests inside. My 5 y.o. son doesn't recall ever " eating cake " , but he loves the decorations and blowing out the candles, and the cake is a big hit with him. I think it also might be a better solution for peer birthday parties than an alt-flour recipe that doesn't taste like the kind of cake they're accustomed to. These cakes are HARD to find on the internet, it took me a lot of work to dig up some sites that sell them, so I'm posting links to these sites here. I'm not endorsing these vendors, but I do want moms to know there are birthday options! Here's what I found: http://www.bayleysboxes.com/cake%20slice%20box.html This is a big impressive site with cakes with lots of different colors and textures and prints. http://www.keepsakefavors.com/favors/product.php?productid=171 This is a small outfit that custom-makes paper cakes for wedding showers and things like that. The cake they sell is from white textured floral paper, but you can decorate over it with stickers or paint and you wouldn't notice the texture. Last year, I ordered late, and the lady made the cake over the weekend and shipped it early so Tom would get it on time, and she's sent extra color-themed ribbon and a few extras. Very sweet of her. http://www.justjenndesigns.com/gifts/papercakedeco.htm This place does very fancy customized bridal designs, a bit more expensive and they don't work Fridays, so I didn't get very far with them. They didn't seem able to accomodate rush jobs. Hope this helps someone! Suzanne
